Philosophy

I'm interested in either major or minoring in philosophy.

What kind of work can I expect?
How much reading and writing papers will I have to do a day/week?

You can expect to flip burgers.

you don’t need to be a jerk?

I would be double majoring biology and philosophy or major biology double minor philosophy and music.
Or if philosophy doesn’t interest me as much as I thought it would I would substitute it with math minor or a music major.

I’d probably be doing this at Case Western (I know their philosphy department is virtually nonexistent but it’s more of a interest or hobby than anything). I might be minoring if I went to WashU

I would consider double majoring or minoring in something. Philosophy majors do well in human resource- type careers.

I have only one friend that is a philosophy majors and her reading/writing load entirely depends on the class. Last semester she had an ancient philosophy course or something along those lines and she had to read for about 3 hours every night. She has had other courses where she only read one book the whole semester.

I know that’s not extremely helpful, but I hope it helps a little.

My son is double majoring in Philosophy and Microbiology at Pitt (which has a terrific philosophy program). His main interest is philosophy and the micro major is a tag-on. He plans to work in international medicine and infectious disease.

We believe (in our family) that the undergraduate years are not for pre-professional or vocational training. That learning is an end to itself, so I applaud his desire to study philosophy.

I think you can expect interesting classes and seminars, stimulating/thought provoking conversations with other phil. majors, lots of major and smaller papers and reading and reading response papers and an expectation of some independent and original thinking.

That helps. er it doesn’t scare me away. I really love reading philosophy and the way it questions me, probably more than math (which might be too much work to double major). I think if i can I’ll try to minor.
