Phone call from Admissions Director??

Dean J, does UVA employ students in admissions? Duke uses work-study students as receptionists, paper sorters, mailers, etc.; it seems to work for them. Cheap labor since the department only pays 25% of their pay.

When my gal was accepted early to her 1st choice - which she had made pretty obvious in her essay LOL - she started getting some pretty kewl mail and items from the admissions office - xmas/holiday cards - birthday card w/free lunch LOL - calls/email from other students - valentines cards - just some thoughtful reminders - tho they were actually not needed - she accepted her acceptance within 48 hours of receiving it - so over and done - yet she still received nice reminders til she started attending.

Yes, we do.

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the congrats. I didn't really wanna wind up saying anything about this, but oh well I was so shocked I just haddd to brag a little. Hehe.

Everyone who's given me support in the process, even if it was a firm response to one of my posts looking for more help -- every bit helped and I'm starting to take in the benefits. This college app process is very exciting! UNC was a school I assumed I'd be rejected from, but it's great to have so many options. UVA is still very much up on my list, so if I got in OOS, that would be a very tough choice btwn the 2, along with some other schools I applied to for major scholarship dough. To whoever said UNC merit money is based alot on essays, that's great! Hopefully I'll see some $$ coming my way to make it possible to attend.

I think Dean J is VERY right about the timing of the response, that UNC is trying to let some of its attractive applicants "know" ahead of time, so that Carolina is on the brain as other decisions come in. Thank you Dean J for all of your input. It's great to get some "inside" perspective.

Thanks to all! This is VERY exciting. :-)

Btw, I wrote the essay about my dad. The Director said it was really just the way I wrote that was great. What can I say, I LOVE writing and I picked a topic I was very passionate about.

GETOUT - just a quick question - what is your intended major? I can't remember :( - or have you not decided for sure yet...........

I'm gonna shoot for a double major and a minor. Major 1: Business/International Business, Major 2: Linguistics, Minor: Spanish. Might take more than 4 years. :-\ I'll be working VERY hard to grad. in 4. Summer courses and a heavy course load during the year. Hopefully my APs will help with Gen Eds.

Gives me a lot of options. I'm fascinated by the field of linguistics, sociolinguistics, and linguistic anthropology. I'm not EXACTLY sure what I want to do -- that's what college is for...growing, exploring, researching, finding my interests and making my path. I know I want to travel alot and work with lots of different people.

GOB - I know there have been moments when you have been quite frantic about this whole admissions process. And I know you worked very hard on those essays ;). I am thrilled for you that you are beginning to see the positive results. Keep us posted!

On an especially cold day in NYC, sending GOB good thougths and wishes that she gets into a warmer climate. Sounds promising.. good luck

Of course, it's 20 degrees in Chapel Hill this morning. That may be warmer, but not exactly warm.

GOB~

Just stoppin' by to offer some HUGE CONGRATS!!!!!! on the exciting news from UNC!!!! What a tremendous acknowledgement of a job exceedingly well done! I wish you all the luck in the world for getting the necessary scholarship(s) to make this beautiful dream a reality. You have a most bright future ahead of you! ~berurah

Wow! This is fantastic news, GetOuttaBuffalo!

I know that much of your decision rests on the amount of aid you receive, so here's to hoping that you get positive results from several top schools, all with competitive financial aid packages.

Congrat. That is a wonderful piece you wrote. I hope Dean J goes and hunts down your application to Uva too.

That would be a tough decision, wouldn't it? To choose between UVA and UNC/Chapel Hill?

In her case, that would depend on financials. I hope Uva gives her a good package or the Jefferson. If that is similar, I think Uva will give her a wonderful education (my bias for my alma mater).

"In her case, that would depend on financials. "

Yes, I know. And, when the financial aid packages arrive, there might be other fine choices besides those two.

Congrats, GooB. Should you get admitted to UVA with a comparable offer to UNC's, I would definitely make sure you visit both and see what your gut tells you about each campus. Don't let trivial things like how you connect or don't with one host/hostess or random student sway you, but do absorb as much as possible the "feel" of what it would like to attend each school. Even very similary schools can have very different feels and most of us tend to work better when we're in a comfort zone, though many students can and do work diligently and succeed even in places they don't actually like all that much.

Congratulations.

I laughed when I saw your thread title because of something that happened two weeks ago. My D is a NM semifinalist. She is being just about stalked by a certain never-before-heard-of school somewhere way down on the chain. Nothing makes them stop contacting her. They must have bought her name from ETS (she's never contacted them or shown any interest). They won't take "Leave me alone" for an answer. Anyway, the phone rang right at suppertime (remember telemarketers?). D answered it. A funny look came over her face. She hung up without saying anything. It was a recorded telephone call from the admissions office at the university in question. And just when we had finished living through the season of recorded messages on behalf of every politico in five counties! A new low...

So, parents, a new horror tactic has joined the mix. Ugh.When will schools (and the Army) learn that they reach overkill very quickly with these unsolicited approaches? My D actually gets very sad about it: "Imagine all the kids who could get a decent education for the cost of this stupid marketing campaign!"

It's heartening, Buffalo, to hear of your wonderful call from a real live thinking, caring admissions officer from a school you want to attend.

Omg, UVA vs UNC. What a privilege it'd be to be able to choose!! It would most certainly be based on fit.

And hopefully, finances would be similar since both meet 100% need.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves...I'm still in the beginning stages of my UVA app. I'm proscrastinating a little...I just want it to be PERFECT, and I'm waiting for inspiration.

A recorded call?!?

This is shaping up to be a banner news day in recruitment marketing. I just read about two schools offering kids free iTunes downloads in exchange for their contact information!

I fear that marketing consultants with little experience in education are pushing for these "innovative" marketing schemes. I don't know what the average student things about these tactics, but I don't like them.

WashDad Jr got a phone call yesterday from a real, live admissions officer telling him his admit letter was on the way. Sometimes the old ways are best...
