Somebody from caltech called me a couple of nights ago and told me I would get a call from a student on the 10th or 11th i think so that I could ask any questions i might have about caltech. So what are some good questions to ask?

What's your major? How do you like it? What do you think Caltechs particular strengths are? Weaknesses? What's been your favorite course so far? What do you do on weekends? How easy is it to meet girls who aren't at Caltech? What's -insert your favorite extracurricular activity - like? Do you think the honor code is really honored? What's your favorite pie at Pie n' Burger?

I believe my only question was "Why shouldn't I come to Caltech?" It was not answered to my satisfaction, so here I am.

In retrospect, "What are you being paid to make these phone calls?" might have been another good question =)

Nobody paid us! Foolish hamster.

do we all get called from students? cuz i got a call from an alumni a while back

Mathmom
blueberry or cherry for S

Actually what I liked best was pecan rolls - though it was hard to get up early enough so they wouldn't have run out. I had a pretty good pecan pie there last spring and the apple pie was also very good. I couldn't believe that place appears to exist in some sort of time work. Dh got his Phd 22 years ago.

Hm. I didn't get a phone call like that. Would anybody know the reason?
Or maybe they just saw my app and decided to cry or laugh in a bad way...but that's ridiculously fast.

I got a call, too. He also said that financial aid estimates were being sent out next week. dianal, the calls went out to the EA admits

Diana -- the phone calls are once decisions are made. So EA admits are getting their phone calls now. RA kids don't get them until early April. :)

why are they calling us? i got in ea, so should i expect one?

so, to understand my story here is a bit of background info: i go to a residential high school and live in a dorm during the week. at my school there are mandatory study periods from the hours 8-10pm and we would get in a lot of trouble if one of the administration caught us on one the pay phones during study time.

so, my story begins... someone called my floor during study time thursday night and instead of ignoring the ringing, one of the juniors in our common room decided to pick up the phone, yell “IT’S STUDY TIME” into the receiver, and hang up. it was funny at the time until i found out later that it was caltech on the phone.

how do i know it was caltech? because they called back. and thankfully the same person did not answer the phone. here’s the rough conversation:

senior: hello?
caltech: oh!! please don’t hang up! please don’t hang up!!!!
senior: okay. but i’m sorry you’ll have to call back at ten.
caltech: i’m calling from caltech. i just wanted to congratulate you and ask you if you had any questions about the school.
senior: pause ...oh... do you want to talk to ____(insert my name here)?
caltech: oh, yes...

and it was at this moment that my floor resident (our floor dad) came on to the floor and yelled in his big booming voice something like “WHY ARE YOU ON THE PHONE?!?” after explaining the situation and who it was, the girl who answered the phone ran and told me caltech was on the phone. but by the time i got to the phone caltech had hung up on me. perhaps the “WHY ARE YOU ON THE PHONE?!?” scared them off.

so in conclusion:
1. i, myself, do not make it a habit to hang up on people or yell “IT’S STUDY TIME” into the phone. i may be a bit crazy, but not in that respect.
2. my floor resident isn’t really the slave-driver that he probably sounded like.
3. i did have a question i would have liked to ask them. financial aid approximations come out this week right? i’m really depending on those.

haha sounds like fun ^^

LOL Rahrah. Your school sounds like a military boot camp!

i got a phone call from a caltech student asking if I had any questions about the school before I applied to Caltech (about late oct). Does caltech do this, is this phone call real? how did they get my phone #? on a side note: are caltech email addresses in this form : firstname@caltech.edu ?

orangemonkey~The phonecall was likely real. They likely got your phone # from the SAT/ACT/PSAT info lists that you have the option to sign up for. Or if you've ever filled out a card for Caltech at a college fair. That said, I don't think getting called during the phone campaign is an indicator of anything admissions-wise, except that Caltech believes you to be interested in Caltech.

Also, you get to choose your caltech e-mail address, so some of them are of that form, some aren't.

rahrah~I wouldn't worry about it. In all likelihood the Caltech person who called you was a student.

I'm just a typical regular decision applicant. Do you think I will get a call?

Yes, this call is almost certainly legit. I've done calling in all three areas (EA Admits, RD admits, prospective applicants). IMSAgeek is right that the calls don't mean anything from an admissions standpoint.

Killthefifi, you will most likely get a call. Sometimes we don't have the time to call everyone, though. Also, the call will be after you are accepted to Caltech (we don't call people who get denied, obviously).

Edit: Email addresses can be in many forms at Caltech btw.

i got a call when i wasn't home, and my dad threw away the callback number lol
so i have had no contact

Do you want to be called, stueydue? I can email the coordinator for the phone calling program and he'll put you back on the list. You can also just ask me or any other techer on CC any questions you have; I am fully trained to do admissions calling (hint: there's no training).
