I just got called from the offices of NC Scholars of UNC.. Did anyone else get called? What does being a NC Scholar mean?

Speaking as a carolina scholar, I feel I'm pretty qualified to answer this :)

Carolina Scholars are selected almost entirely on the basis of academic achievement, and are the most academically (sp? the irony!) competitive scholarship sponsored by the university. It's divided about equally between in-state and out of state, I don't remember how many people get it, but it's not too big or too small.

Then on the basis of the theme you choose (our choices were Religious Diversity in America, Art and Nature, and International Relations) you get put in a group of about 15 or so. That group has a faculty mentor (I love mine to death, and am actually in a class of hers right now). You do things together (my group went rafting, we go to our facutly mentor's house for dinner sometimes, and we do service projects together, see plays, pretty much everything). The good thing about this is the group gets funding so pretty much anything you do as a group can be at least subsidized. I saw a local production of Into the Woods for Free, went on a trip for free, etc.

You have the option of joining committees to design classes or seminars or public productions. You can get funding pretty easily to bring guest speakers to campus or start organizations. Plus, all Carolina Scholars are in the honors program (I believe it's the only scholarship with an automatic shoe-in).

For nuts and bolts, if you're in-state, you get 7500 a year, out of state I think gets 15,000. I'm assuming you're instate. If you get national merit, which a lot of Carolina Scholars do, that's like 8500 a year, which covers tuition, room, books, and part of board. Basically you have to come up with a meal plan and personal spending money.

But I really think you meet a lot of cool people through it. They tend to me more active on campus and interesting. A lot of my friends I met through the program and some of the people who met through it are living in the same dorm/rooming together next year. Don't get me wrong, a lot of my friends aren't Carolina Scholars. But forgive me if I'm a little biased towards them.

Anything else you wanna know, don't hesitate to ask! I'm really excited cause my scholars group was thinking of kind of taking one of the incoming groups under our wings and doing a partnership-mentoring thing.

Havent gotten the call or that letter you got. Congratulations on getting Carolina Scholars. I am still hoping that they are keeping me in the running.

Liziziz do you remember when you got your acceptance to carolina scholars (ie. pre or post regular decision date March 31)

thanks and once again congrats

I just got it when I got my admissions letter with the mail. I was pretty lazy about my UNC app because, as you may or may not know, if you're doing pretty well and you're in state, you kind of take UNC for granted. It didn't come with a likely letter or anything, didn't get called that I can remember (but then, I had some weird home circumstances). I just got a letter, I think it came with my big packet. So there is hope yet!

yeah, Mr Kaufman said that I would get all of this information in writting when they send out all scholarship stuff.

I applied and was accepted EA. On several occasions I have told the admissions office that I am interested in UNC but am leaving my options open (although UNC is @ the top of the list). My college counselor told me that whenever they ask I should say I am waiting for "Scholarship Offers" prior to making a final commitment. So UNC is probably just trying to keep the interest alive until I get all the mail stuff in early April. Hence, its really likely that others will get their info with their acceptance packages.

GOOD LUCK humbucker87 and others!!

huh? does that have anything to do with being a regular NC scholar? my counselor told me about it.. it's based purely on gpa i think. but it didn't have anything to do with UNC or scholarships. have any of you heard of this?

I dont even know... I'm confused too, thats why I started the thread...But Mr Kaufman did say it was run by the UNC Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence and that would get more info with my Scholarship stuff.

Aw, dang it - I got all excited when someone from admissions called me tonight, but they just wanted to know if I was coming to Explore Carolina.

Bah. :(

Uh oh....the day after I received my early admission letter in the mail I got the common phone call that asked if I was coming to UNC, and I said that it was the only place I applied. Do you think that I messed up my chances at a scholarship by saying this???? hope not.

thanks

ps I have already sent in my enrollment deposit :

Kaufman is the man!!! He runs the program and I actually have a class with him now, kind of a bizarre (sp?) one at that. I'm not sure about scholarship chances having anything to do with that...I could ask him I guess. Recently they turned over the selection of Carolina Scholars (as they are known in the University) to some faculty members. What happens is they pick kids from the honors college pool and look at their essays and some regular stats, I believe. It can't have all been based on GPA because I'd made some B's during HS, about 1 per year, wheras a friend of mine was val at his HS. Just depends. Good luck with scholarships though, I don't think they have access to financial status or forms turned in, as it's totally non-need based.

haha well that's just GREAT. my essays were the worst part of my app, by far.

that makes sense because i'm invited into the honors program...haha

Liziziz...do you have aim or an email so I can contact you?

how bout I just contact you? I've put my email out on sites before and it hasn't exactly been a great time all around.
