i just had a phone call from ucla encouraging me to apply for the alumni scholarship. i asked how they got my information and she told me admissions actually has a selection process in which they send the info of the applicants they consider qualified for the scholarship to the alumni assoc. strange, huh? i thought they only sent e-mails. anyone else get this phone call?

Yeah I got it.

I also got the Regents invitation yesterday by mail.

I wonder if there's any correlation?

well, i didn't get the regents invitation so i don't know if there's any correlation. i hope there is though and i get an invitation in the mail soon!

i got the call around 6 30 pm

well you have to apply for the regent scholarship... so thats probably why you didn't get the invitation. i didn't get it either... i was definitely too lazy too apply for something i had little chance of getting! : )

my understanding was that just by applying to the university, you got automatic consideration for regents and chancellors

Right. (10)

You are automatically considered when you apply, yes.

However, the letter they send the Regents applicants (which gaurantees their acceptance already) is only an INVITATION to apply for the Regents scholarship. It certainly does not mean you actually got it.

i got the phone call and e-mails, which is kinda weird.

hmm. my mistake. i heard info elsewhere that must have been incorrect.

congrats to all of you who got an invite! : )

My daughter got the call yesterday, too. Her uncle, whose son went through the application process years ago, believes strongly that that means she will get accepted. Let's hope that's true for all of us!

hmm, can you please clarify for me? My son got a phone message on the answering machine (from a human, not computer) encouraging him to apply for the UCLA Alumni Assoc. Scholarship. (not the Regents) Does this mean he is more likely to be admitted to UCLA? Or does every applicant get a phone call? We did not get a letter but he also got an email. thanks.

Every applicant I know received a phone call / email inviting them to apply for the ALUMNI scholarship.

I'm pretty sure it has no correlation to your acceptance.

The Regents Invitation only came in the mail for a very select few of my friends (who all had very high stats) and getting that means you get accepted.

The only real early indication (unless you're an engineer) of a guaranteed admission is the Regents invitation. To the second poster, the two are not related (although getting an regents invitation means you're a strong candidate for the alumni as well, but the reverse is not necessarily true). The alumni emails mean absolutely nothing. I asked my cousin to forward me the email that he was sent when he asked UCLA because he was applying this year, and this was what they sent him:

Dear ******,

The email that went out was sent to 10,000 random applicants. Because there is no GPA or SAT minimum to apply, we cannot publicize the scholarship to all applicants to UCLA -- we just can't handle that volume. So please apply and don't worry about not receiving the email.

Thanks,

For the phone calls, I'm assuming that its just based on the number of willing Alumni volunteers to determine who and how many they would call.

Congrats to those with an invitation to apply for the Regents -- it means you are IN!

There's seems to be a distinction as to who's getting called. Several of the better applicants from my school got calls, whereas others with worse stats have not received them.

At this point I think one of these three things are true; either the alumni association has received information about admits, or they are doing their own filtering of applications and calling people they think have the best stats, or both.

the alumni assoc receives a download of all apps, and asks alumni volunteers to make calls. They only call as many kids as they have volunteers for....
