Phone for semester in Florence?

Mominva_

Yes, it was $2.95 per month on skype for my son to call from UK to US. He called from his computer and was connected to any cell phone or land line in the US. You can cancel at anytime without penalty so he just had it for study abroad. (This is different than the free Skype callling computer to computer that we also have.)

His international cell phone, a pay as you go, was purchased in the UK and used for his local calls/texts to the kids at his study abroad U, etc.

We called our cell phone provider, Sprint, to put a hold on his phone for the months he was away so we wouldn’t have to pay for the non-use.

In case I didn’t explain this well, the $2.95 was for unlimited calling. No extra fees at all.

Thanks, crazed. I thought you meant for computer to computer. Not sure if her internet access is in her apartment or only at the student center, but will look into that

Our situation is improved. D#1 found her London internship phone with removable sim card, so D#2 will take that and purchase an Italy sim card. She’ll also take an International calling card to use to reach us if internet access is limited.

Maybe we will both add the $2.95 Skype option, then we can call her cell if the internet is only at school.

Thanks to all.

mominva,
you might also want to take a look at google voice. its new but I found they had great rates for calling to Japan from the U.S. and you can just call from your home phone. I also am using it for free calls from my home phone to anywhere in the U.S.

Will do Oaklandmom, thanks.

Hope your boy had a great experience abroad!

We already had an international sim card from Cellular Abroad, but the international phone had bitten the dust. I got an inexpensive, unlocked quad-band phone and put in our international sim card. It has a UK number, but can call anywhere in the world, pretty much. She may buy an Austria specific pay as you go sim card so that she can call her friends with local phones during the program, and just switch out the sim cards when she travels. We will download skype and use that. Thanks for the advice about the $2.95 plan. That way she can call her friends as well.

Funny, DD tells me she uses Skype calling for her friends who study in the UK; she says they charge for minutes!

Nevermind (think Emily Litella’s voice), I see they have 2 options.
