Photography at FIT?

I am hoping to go to FIT for photography in Spring 2014. I love photography, and I'm hoping to get a career in fashion photography someday.
I just have a few questions about the program, and the school! So if you want to answer one or all, please do so.

How hard was the portfolio for getting in? I have it printed out and was going to start practicing, I really want it to do well.

I don't own a DSLR, and can't afford one for awhile. Are they expecting DSLR quality images? And is it okay to edit the photos before sending them?

Is the photography program a good program for beginners?

I'm 22, so I'll be 23 when I go. Is there other students my age going there? And would I be way older than everyone if i lived in a dorm?

Last and not least, I do have other careers in mind at the back of my head. A part of me wants to be a stylist, or choose designers to showcase, for a magazine such as Glamour, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmo. Or, I'd want to own my own store. What degree(s) would be good for these careers?

Thank you! I have been looking for someone to ask all of these things, and I'm so glad I finally landed here.

I am applying to the photography program as well as a transfer. FIT’s program for photo is very specific and intense compared to other art schools. If you do not have an slr camera and cannot afford one, I would try to practice with a film camera (most of the classes will be evenly split between film and digital- into 35mm, medium format, large format). If you are truly passionate about it, you will always want to be taking pictures and finding insertion everywhere. you will have to keep working at it. If you do not have much experience printing or color editing, I would suggest you submit your portfolio online. a photography degree would be good to have even if you decide to do something with styling. let me know if you want me to take a look at your portfolio! i’d love to help out (i’m already in school majoring in photography)
