My daughter is planning on majoring in photography. She is currently entering her sophomore year of high school and its time we start investigating potentials for her, so we know how high to aim with GPA, SAT and ACT scores. I would prefer her to stay close to the east coast and she prefers to stay out of snow country. Any recommendations on schools?

I would say Syracuse University’s College of Visual & performing arts has a good major for photography but I guess snow is a no no for you.

The fact alone that your daughter is interested in majoring in photography will cut down the amount of schools you’ll be looking at considerably… that’s not the most common of majors offered.

Connecticut: University of Hartford
Florida: University of Miami
Georgia: Savannah College of Art and Design
Massachusetts: Hampshire College
New York: Bard College, Fordham University, Hofstra University, New York University, Parsons: The New School of Design, Pratt Institute
North Carolina: Elon University
Pennsylvania: Arcadia University, Drexel University, Temple University
Rhode Island: Providence College, Rhode Island School of Design

I’d throw in Rutgers: Mason Gross School of the Arts. Top-notch programs.

Rochester Institute of Technology has the best photography program in the world by far. A little snow won’t hurt her.

UNC-Chapel Hill has a photojournalism major, although UNC is pretty difficult to get into out-of-state.

Google is your friend.

Thanks for the helpful hints. At least now I have something to look at besides Duke at 50k per year. I’ve done the whole google thing and I even work at a college myself…but finding ones that offer a photography degree that are actually worth the money is quite difficult when just looking at the schools website.

House of London,

Yeah, snow is a no-no. We spent about 2 years in Oswego, NY, which is very close to Syracuse. It is a very nice area, but more snow than we California babies can tolerate. (We’re Virginian transplants :))
