Photography schools

Hey guys,

Photography which started off just as a hobby has now turned into a real passion for me. I hope to join an undergraduate degree course in photography.

It would be really nice if you could list some of the best and most well reputed photography schools in the US. The most important criteria is the placement record that the school has.

Thank you so much.

By placement record, I assume you are talking about commercial or editorial photography. It would really help to know what specific field(s) you are interested in because each school tends to be strong in certain fields, and weak in others. Without knowing your interests hear are various photography schools that have strong commercial or editorial programs:

School of Visual Arts (SVA)
Art Center College of Design
RIT
Parsons

Thanks for the information CAPhotographer,

The fields im largely interested in are:

Fashion Photography
Automobile Photography

What are the schools specifically well known for these fields?

Thanks.

for fashion:

SVA and Parson’s. Parson’s is the number one school in the country for fashion design, so you would have good access to that. Although SVA, in general, is a better overall photography school.

for automobile: I must admit I am not sure who specializes in that. It is difficult because you would need a very large facility. I know the Academy of Art has the facilities, but I am not sure how good they are in the field. Art Center College of Design might because they are the number one school for transportation design.

I also wish to study photography.
A year ago it became my passion and I recently decided I wanted to make it my career, but now Im having a lot of difficulties finding a nice art school that is not as expensive as the top ranking schools such as parsons and SVA.
Naturally however most of the schools within the US that I look at are a great deal of money, especially since I am an international student.
I wish you the best of luck in finding a school that is well known, good in the photography field and in your price range.
One thing to remember, always look at the portfolios of the current students. If you look at Parsons their photography portfolio is not what I would say up to par in my eyes. It seems to be random shots the students have taken instead of aimed at a particular area they like. You are into fashion photography and if you notice there is little or even no fashion shots within Parson’s online student portfolio.

Also while I have someone who does photography attention, if I am suppose to do an interpretive self portrait should it show my face or can it just show my back?

Would you happen to have any nice examples of one or know someone who does good self portraits so that I can see what it is I am expected to portray in the photo. It is the last part of my application for Watkins which I am stuck on.

I agree, Parson’s quality is questionable.

Self-portraiture today is such a wide genre. In the contemporary world a self-portrait no longer has to be about likeness, nor is a portrait for that matter. I would say it is pretty safe to call it a self-portrait if it tells something about your character. Lee Friedlander is quite well known for his self-portraits, Cindy Sherman has widely expanded the idea of a self-portrait as well. Self-portraiture goes back to the 15th century, so there is a lot to draw on.

Thanks a ton for the help. Those names really opened my eyes to the endless boundaries of self portraits, especially after viewing some of Cindy Sherman’s work.

the Fashion Institute of Technology is a great option for a cheap commercial photography school – located right in the center of Manhattan and all kinds of connections to the editorial and fashion worlds.

Rochester Institute of Technology has long been regarded as one of the very very best commercial photography as well as having an excellent photojournalism program in the country. You will not find better studio space and equipment, anywhere. The College of Imaging Arts and Sciences is over 100 years old.
