The universe had one last treat for me today!

I got home late last night, and started my first job in a decade early this morning, so I’m just now looking at the pics I took yesterday morning. I am pretty sure my mind is made up about where we will go in my husband’s retirement (it’s already on his list of acceptable places). For now, no more fun travels for me.

Do tell!

Oh, Maine! I really, really didn’t want to leave to come home.

(Pic so I can stay within the rules and not be off topic.)

We returned to AZ from our summer in Maine a little over a week ago. I’m counting the days until we go back. It’s a magical place. (The desert is great in many ways, too, but I’m a forest gal.)

Maine is a beautiful state—we wouldn’t be able to tolerate the extreme cold but otherwise, we loved our visit there. We were there at the end of leaf-peeping season.

@HImom , I would flip what you said, as I could never tolerate the year-round heat and humidity you enjoy in Hawaii! I HATE THE HEAT!!! I guess I have a cold-tolerant makeup.

My list of European vacations bears this out: Ireland, Iceland, Northern Europe, Scotland. On deck: England and Switzerland.

We hate extreme heat and cold, thus Maine in the summer, AZ in the winter. Best of both.

Yup, I am a fragile flower and can’t take extreme heat nor cold. I do ok in HI but we are finally getting quotes for central A/C.

I could live that life. We have said we would love to spend about May - Oct in Maine, but definitely not winters.

Where were the Maine beach pictures taken?

@milgymfam SOOOO jealous. Not of where you’ve visited, but of your incredible photos and eye for composition - or just for beauty. Thank you so much for sharing.

@milgymfam - thank you for letting me use your lighthouse photo as inspiration for a watercolor painting - Meredith NH

York Beach, Wells, and Portland are where I took photos in Maine.

In general I don’t care for extreme temperatures either direction, I don’t like direct sun either. That said I don’t mind humidity or fog (as long as I have the proper clothes for them). In fact my skin loves both of those.

I love HI all year long (I just don’t hang out in the sun); and London in spring or fall and even winter I don’t mind at all.

I visited Maine twice, both in a September - I wasn’t prepared for the chilly temps on my first trip (and was camping…it was COLD!); the second time I was prepared and thought it was one of the most beautiful places. Especially with the gorgeous foliage!

Preparedness makes a ton of difference! One of my friends used to say, “Siberia is a paradise if you wear the right clothes!”

/Sigh… speaking of Siberia, I always wanted to see lake Baikal. Don’t think this is going to happen in my lifetime…

We’re not fond of extreme temps for long either, but we also need green canopies, carpets, and with a preference for Big Water. Our winter breaks are almost always on islands or in FL. I only like deserts when we’re passing through them on trips. They’re cool to look at, but not where we want to live. If we move further north than PA, it will probably be toward the Great Lakes or St Lawrence River.

Me too. We were supposed to take the Trans-Siberian Railroad in 2021 as a family trip. Covid put an end to that, and now, it looks like it will never happen (sigh).

A former coworker did that trip and was raving about it! So sad we might never be able to do that. :frowning:
