Does anybody have photos or a link to photos of the Grinnell campus? The virtual tour on their website is under constructin and I'd like to see what it looks like...

This doesn't answer your question, but it is an offbeat tour of Grinnell of sorts.

If you want 'real' shots, go to the grinnell web site: Campus Map

If you click on the building name, you'll get a shot of it.

type it into google and search under images. You'll get quite a few.

M's Mom

The video is great--thanks for the link.

The new student center is, imo, one of the most wonderful buildings anywhere. It just feels good to be in that building.

I agree, bethievit. My son and I visited twelve other selective LACs, and Grinnell's facilities just blew the rest away. I think, however, that Grinnell does a really poor job of marketing themselves - even the brochures we've gotten don't convey how great the buildings and facilities are. Nor the fact that their intro classes are about half the size of other SLACs! And their website is also extraordinarily basic - yes, you can find some good photos of the Rosenfield student center, but you really have to trawl around. Maybe some of it is the midwestern self-effacing character, but come on guys, you have a great college, a terrific story and a huge endowment - use some of it to spruce up your communciations and marketing!

Perhaps we need to have a little talk with them. My son also chose Grinnell from a list of stellar possibilities. I'm sure the beautiful campus didn't hurt but he was even more interested in the character of the students. He felt it was the most genuine, unselfconscious place he visited and he's finding it to be a great fit so far. The resources are, as you say, just tremendous and the Prez says they are planning to increase the faculty and keep enrollment numbers constant to further decrease class size. I really like Pres. Osgood too--a gentleman and a scholar, but not above making an appearance in a goofy YouTube video.

yeah, I wish their literature had more of campus and not just pretty pictures of other stuff. It was the picture of the library that caught my attention, and that was in the older admission stuff they sent out.

You know, M's Mom, the more I think about it, I think the school is just that unpretentious that it won't toot its own horn. Maybe it's a good thing in a way.

Did the library picture show the "treehouses"? There are 2 loft-like study areas in the library that are fun.

Msmom, I totally agree. We were blown away when we got there. I don't know what we were expecting, but what we found was a college my D is hoping to get into. And the students were wonderful. SO FRIENDLY and smart! We were turned around once and we had not one, but two students help us find our way. The other thing that hit my D right off the bat was how happy all the students seemed. At some of the colleges we visited the students were so intense and stressed looking. Grinnell students were yapping about interesting stuff, smiling, saying hi to each other, etc. It went from a 'lets go check it out' to a 'I really want to go there!' kind of place for my D. The only thing is, she is one who loves peace and nature. A city lover would not like its location. We are talking corn, corn, corn. :) We asked several random students if they felt bored out there and they all said they had so many choices of what to do they never were bored. The biggest store other then a mini-walmart (blech-Walmart. I guess that's a midwest thing) is a huge John Deer tractor store! But, the professors were awesome, her overnight a success and the opportunities endless.

We visited in October. The place is fabulous if you don't mind the corn fields (my D didn't). The buildings are very impressive. Here are some pictures. Keep in mind that I purposefully avoided taking pictures with anyone identifiable in it. That campus was quite lively while we were there and I waited until between classes to take the pics:

thanks for all the links to photos citrusbelt...
looks like a great campus. Hopefully I'll get a chance to visit

I hope you do get to visit rma. You can't get the full effect of the student center without being there, inside the building. I think you're right, citrusbelt, that it's a happy (and studious) campus.

You may also want to check out structure - photography by David K. Kennedy. David Kennedy is a recent alum ... while at Grinnell, he published a book of gorgeous photos of the campus. Having spent many years there (student and staff), I was surprised when I saw these photos - they made me see my second home in a completely different way. Note that the photos are pre-Rosenfield Center and pre-Darby demolition, but otherwise they're pretty up-to-date.

Thanks for the link! The top wideangle photo is a poster I just got framed. It is so BEAUTIFUL. It will be nice to have a little piece of my son's campus here in VT.

Are there a lot of jarring modern buildings?

There are several modern buildings, but I feel they've done a great job in harmonizing the different architectural periods and styles.
