Hi,

I'm going to be taking Physics 1A next quarter. I'm expecting it to be a bit challenging for me. A fourth-year CS major I know recommended that I take Physics 98XB concurrently with Physics 1A. He said it would help me a lot with understanding the 1A concepts and solving 1A problems.

I have a couple questions about 98XB. First, are 98XB and other PEERS Collaborative Learning Workshops meant for underrepresented students only, or are they open to anyone? Second, is 98XB worth it? Or will my time be better spent working on the 1A problem sets?

Thanks,

Hi. I took 6A and then took the workshop (basically Physics 98XB). I felt like I didn’t really learn much in 6A. Also, Corbin taught the workshop. I really felt like I was learning more in the workshop than my class.

It depends on who is teaching the workshop. But, with Corbin, I felt like I was actually solving problems about physics as opposed to just plugging in things into equations. He also reviews things briefly and then helps you find a more methodical way about solving problems. The best thing about the workshop was that you got to interact w/ Corbin but not take any of his exams. Heh.

You don’t have to take the workshop for credit. I didn’t. I am also not in PEERS - I think they open the Physics workshop to students taking a physics course. For me, the workshop was worth it because it was with Corbin. I mainly took it because I actually wanted to learn about thinking about physics. If I didn’t care about learning physics and just cared about my grade, I probably would have just done practice problems by myself.

My roommate took the workshop w/ me and she was in 1A. I think she thought it was really helpful, too. But, again, Corbin was teaching it.

Oh, and you only have to go to the majority of the workshops if you are registered in the class.

Thanks so much! Yes, Corbin is teaching the workshop… except it looks like he’s scheduled for two sections at the same time in different locations??? ([Schedule of Classes: Class Listing](http://■■■■■■/8YdQd)).

I’m going to try to work it into my schedule and officially enroll in it. That will at least deter me from blowing it off every week ;)
