I am an incoming freshman in Clark school of Engineering and am registered for PHYS171 for fall semester. The engineering school lists PHYS161 as a basic science requirement, however. The material to be taught in both classes seem to be the same. Can I still take PHYS171 instead of 161? Will they let me do that and does it matter for engineering majors? The instructors for Phys161 classes that are open as of now are Buehrle and Liu and for Phys171 is Dr. Lobb. Any comments regarding their teaching abilities would be great! Thanks!

ALL Engineering majors MUST take PHYS 160, and PHYS260/261, and some majors must take PHYS270/271. So to answer your question as an Engineer you are not allowed to take PHYS171, which is actually only for Physics majors.

I believe you have to take PHYS161 as an engineering major.

My brother is a mechanical engineering major and he took Physics 260, 261, 270, 271…he tested out of physics 161

How’s PHYS270? Taking that class first semester freshman year.
