Physical Education (Gym!)

Do most people that go into Physical Education play a sport at the college level? Is it looked down upon in hiring if you haven't?

My nephew has played a variety of sports through the years, one at the Varsity level in HS, and it just dawned on him he'd love to coach and teach PE! As he was searching for a college major (he's a high school junior) nothing really appealed to him. But then he realized his whole world evolved around sport, activity, getting others involved-- it was right in front if him! He didn't think of this as a possible "job" because it was "fun"! He would also be interested in minoring in coaching and has a black belt in karate and played other sports outside of school and at the JV level.

What do you guys think?

Well, to put it bluntly, it’s up there with “Communications” as a stereotypical major for the college jock, and the fact is that there is no real need for PE teachers. Many schools are actually cutting back on PE programs, and there are a lot of certified PE teachers out there. Also, at least at my school, the PE education curriculum is actually pretty tough, along with all the education certification neccisary (Anatomy/Physiology is nothing to scoff at!)

If that is what he really loves, I would say go for it! But if it is like it sounds (Gym education? Sounds cool!) maybe look at other options.

I would say if he really enjoys that then go for it. However, its more than likely going to be hard to find a job. I would recommend double majoring in a related field, exercise science possibly leading to physical therapy or health education (can teach, work in community, government jobs, etc) or something related? Doing this will just help to make sure that he has a back up plan because if he can’t find a job as a P.E. teacher there isn’t anything more he can do with that degree.
