These days, nearly all engineering projects involve the use of CAD/CAM software. But is there still a need and use for physical drawing and sketching using pencil and paper for planning and such? or is it all done digitally now?

Drafting knowledge is still desired.

When you’re on site, some things just need to be drawn quickly for comprehension and computers are not always accessible.

Learn how to draft. At least the basics.

Before you begin developing a CAD model of your design, many engineers (my self included) like to at least sketch out what roughly what the design will be. Helps you organize what you do with your CAD model.

You will also be in meetings and the design will be discussed including many times changes to the design. Again, it is very useful to know how to sketch out those changes quickly on the board (or the back of the envelope, literally) for all to see.
