As a chemistry or physics major, how much work will I have with the core as well? How hard is it to get that A?

I thought chemistry and physics were natural sciences.

Either way…

The sciences classes in general are curved better than say economics, usually curve to like B+, but the competition in them is stiff. So if you do well relative to your peers you’ll get a good grade, but your peers are crazy.

well, not crazy on average. but there are definitely ABSURD students in the upper level math/physics classes.

If you DO THE PROBLEM SETS, you’ll get an A in the class. That’s really all that’s necessary.
If you’re thinking about 2801 Physics, it will take up most of your life, regardless of how smart you are. It’s the still the hardest class I’ve taken here.

What about Lit Hum, UW, and FoS?

In general, except for freshman orgo and phys2801, all of the freshman and sophomore math and science classes are pretty easy. Doing well in those and cc/lithum/uw/FoS shouldn’t be a problem.

I guess you could say that, coming out of high school, I’m afraid to come to college and get B’s.

toast, it is a fear, but consider you are getting b’s at one of the best universities in the world. not too shabby.

plus, core courses tend to be grade stabilizers for most students. you can knock out a B/B+ pretty regularly in core classes if you do the minimum. any extra time or effort you spend increases your grade. it is when you don’t show up or complete assignments that your grade drops.

I aim to go to grad school for chemistry, and would just hate to have awful grades…

ah, well, pm me, i know someone going to grad in chemistry, as ivill says in the physics thread about uchicago. honestly by the time you take the intro chem courses and you are still at it - everything will become easy for you. work your butt off at the beginning and then enjoy.
