Hi, I'm a high school senior considering a career in physical therapy, but the colleges that I plan to go to don't have physical therapy as a major. Do you know if it's okay for me to major in something like biology, then move on to PT school?

I believe PT's get a BA or BS then transfer to a PT school. I believe (at least here in CA) most PT schools are Masters programs & you have to have a BA before you apply (you might want to check out UCSF). If no one else posts send me a PM so I'll remember & I'll double check with a friend who is a PT.

My daughter's friend, Jennie, is a senior in high school. She wants to major in biology, then go to PT school -- just as you do. Several physical therapists counselled her regarding this route.

There are several ways to attain the goal of being a PT - but please realize that it is now pretty much a PhD program in PT at many many schools. There are also some other majors that you can pursue - exercise physiology - biology - sports medicine - actually any major that a student excells in/has an interest in - but as long as the requirements for the grad school piece are completed you can pretty much do any degree - science heavy tho. By getting a BS in something applicable - and very good GPA's - and fulfill the volunteer requirement of 100 hours that most PT schools require - and getting a decent grade on the GRE - you are part way there.

Another route to take is a guaranteed entrance program - where you essentially enter into a PT program as a freshman - and as long as the GPA meets the requirement - then the grad school piece is pretty much a done deal. The con to these programs is that if you do decide that PT is not your cup of tea - it can be difficult to declare in another major.

PT programs are very competitive - so please keep that in mind.
