Physical therapy?

What are the best colleges for physical therapy in the northeast?

My daughter is interested in PT. What we’re finding is that very few schools offer a PT major. That’s mainly because you have to go on to grad school to become a PT. So, for my D, we’re looking at a variety majors/approaches to prepare for PT grad school.

In some cases, schools have a PT major. In other cases, they have Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or good ol’ pre-Health Advising.

Here’s her current list of schools - SAT midpoint - relevant major.

William & Mary-1345-Kinesiology & Health Science
Bucknell-1315-Pre-Health
Franklin and Marshall -1310-Pre-Health

Note there are no large schools here. She wants small. She’s also looking beyond the northeast, and has other criteria that make these schools work for her. There also exist other PT schools that she has already ruled out. (I say that because the last time I posted this list I was flamed for sharing nonsense. Diff’rent strokes for diff’rent folks.)

No, she’s not applying to all of these. It’s just the list as it stands now.

Springfield College, in Springfield, MA has a PT program with a strong reputation. It is competitive to get into.

My son is at Gettysburg as a freshman. They have a health science major and a great science department. He is interested in PT as well. Some of the other schools we looked at did not have this major and not the other offerings that Gettysburg has. He did not want to go to a school where he had to be a bio major for example. This was a great fit!

About a thousand years ago a good friend majored in PT at Simmons College (all female school) in Boston–I just checked, and sure enough, they still have the PT major, as part of a six year program.

^is 6 year the normal for PT degree?..my frosh daughter has been saying she wants to be a PT ever since a foot injury 4 years ago.

JFortuna411 & DougBetsy:
What about Lynchburg College in VA? They have an undergraduate major in Athletic Training & a DPT. Lynchburg is one of Loren Pope’s “Colleges That Change Lives.” It’s a small college, too.

Thanks, woodwindsmum. Lynchburg wasn’t even on our radar.

Quinnipiac (CT) is supposed to have a good program also. Best of luck!
