So I was accepted to their PA program (yay!) and am super stoked, but am worried about how hard it may be. I know that there are some schools that “weed-out” kids… for example, ___University may accept 100 kids into their PA program, but will only let 20 enter the professional portion (according to QU’s website, only 20 students per year come from their direct entry program). I’ve been accepted to other PA programs where only 10 spots or so are open to students not from the direct entry path. Do you know how the process works at QU in detail? How many freshmen are accepted to the program? Do most students who enroll in their direct entry go on to the grad program? I really like the school, but am afraid that my fellow classmates and I will be fighting tooth and nail to get a spot in the grad program… that’s what i’m trying to avoid thanks!
Hi @lesetoiles and congrats on your acceptance into the ELMPA program!
We generally have 25 students a year join us as freshman for the program and each is guaranteed a spot in the graduate program - there is no competition amongst classmates for spots in the graduate level of the program. Some key stipulations needed to maintain your status through to the graduate level would be…
1.) Maintaining satisfactory GPA requirements
a.) Cumulative GPA of 3.0 minimum
b.) Sciences GPA of 3.0 minimum
c.) All required courses must have at least a C- or higher
d.) Cannot have any course failures or incompletes
2.) Completing the required direct patient contact hours (1,000 hours)
3.) Completing the EMT certification
4.) Satisfy the Immunization, technical standards (being able to physically perform duties) and background check requirements
Please refer to the University catalog http://www.quinnipiac.edu/prebuilt/pdf/catalogs/2014-2015/catalog14-15_undergrad.pdf page 161 for a more detailed description of what’s needed to progress to the grad level.
On the graduate level approximately 20 students meet the ELMPA students to form the graduate level of the program. We typically admit about 50 students into the program, all of which are very academically capable of doing the work required in the program.
Feel free to email me if you would like to be placed in touch with current students in the program so you can get the student perspective. Having seen a number of my friends and students go through the program, they do an absolutely phenomenal job of making sure you’re ready for the grad level. Many of them have commented to me about how family like the program becomes.
Good luck and keep us posted if you have more questions
