Physics 1A: Workshop vs. Covel Tutoring

I am in Physics 1A this quarter. The workshop, taught by Prof. Corbin, is on Thursdays, at the same time as my Covel Tutoring for 1A. (Because of a scheduling conflict between the workshop and Phys 1A lecture 3, lecture 3 students can only attend the workshop on Thursdays and not on Tuesdays, but Prof. Corbin says we're still welcome to come). Basically, which one should I choose to attend throughout the quarter? Thanks in advance.

You should go to Corbin’s.

What if we have chem 20 L from 2-5 on thursdays as well as taking physics 1a lecture 3? Is missing Corbin’s workshop going to severely disadvantage me in any way? I’m already finding physics 1a difficult.

^ Try asking professor/TA if you could be moved to different section. I know in Skibo, there’s an opening on Tuesday 11-3 (as of this morning)… If it comes to it, you can even go into the section you want and ask if anyone wants to switch. Don’t know if it’s possible, but you can try.

^^^ If I had to decide between, Covel and Corbin, I’d go with Corbin. (Actually, I am going with Corbin, but I actually don’t have a schedule conflict other than being in lec 3). I hear that if you really want to learn physics, take Corbin, so I assume he must be at least decently good and probably knows more about physics than the Covel tutors. You could also try attending one session of either on separate weeks to see which suits you better. =/

^ Okay, I’m reading the info sheet for it, and it seems like there will be several different “facilitators”(who may or may not include Corbin, that meet in different places depending on class and lecture) and you do physics problems while they watch. I suppose that makes sense. It’s really hard to under stand physics (or do well in physics) if you can’t do the problems.

I skipped Gekelman today to go to the workshop, and it was great. The workshops are Corbin’s brainchild, and he facilitates them (or at least for sure the Tue/Thurs. 3-4:30pm one). I’ll go to my first Covel tutoring session on Thursday, but I have a feeling I’ll be dropping it (I hope I’m allowed to!) in favor of Corbin’s workshop.

What did you learn about in the workshop? The lecture was about deriving the equations for velocity and position with calculus. It’s not exactly a fast-paced class so far…

^ That’s cause people like me come to Gekelman after class and in email about how we don’t know vectors, sucked at high school physics etc. xD I think it’s nice that he’s trying to teach it like it’s a real intro class.

I just have the feeling that I’m not going to do any of the homework and the midterm will be much harder than I expect.

After Corbin gave an introduction to the format of the workshop, it was about the fundamentals of kinematics. He showed us a simple problem-solving method, worked out a problem for us, then had us try one on our own. It seems like simple stuff but the way he presented it was so good.

Re: Gekelman’s lecture yesterday-- Hopefully on exams we won’t be required to derive the kinematics equations…?
