That's what it says in the physics department fall 08 textbook list. For me, I have already bought physics for scientists and engineers vol 1 4th edition along with the mastering physics student access kit from half.com brand new in shrink wrap for $68, so I suppose I will still need to buy the ucb physics 7a handbook. You can find the textbook and mastering physics package with isbn 0132273586. I think that's the one to buy, since it matches the description exactly.
Hope this helps.

Em... I am not sure, when I bought it on half.com, it says it includes the mastering physics stuff in the description. So I just grabbed the cheapest one for $68, and it just arrived yesterday brand new in shrink wrap along with the mastering physics kit. Just you know, mastering physics is nothing but a log in code for masteringphysics website. My suggestion is just grab the cheapest one on ebay, preferably brand new so it would probably come with the code. If the one you purchased doesn't have it, you can always just go on to MasteringPhysics: Make Learning Part of the Grade, click on New Student and then click on Purchase a registration code.

ohh i get it now, but i checked the mastering physics website and MasteringPhysics for Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 4th edition by Giancoli costs $44.50 USD; however cal student store sells the used ones for only $40, weird, how can we reuse a access code?

If something is not required, then yes, you can get by without it and do not NEED it (hence being recommended, but not required). E-mail the professor if you need more clarification on the materials. I'd just buy what's required and wait until the first day of class or so to consider whether I should be the recommended material or not (it looks like the recommended material is basically just what's the in required package but sold separately).
