The first entry is a condensed version (only mechanics and waves) of Giancoli's textbook. The second entry is the 7A workbook along with a password enabling you to use the MasteringPhysics homework system.

You should probably buy Giancoli's complete textbook since 1) I assume you're taking 7B as well 2) it's easier to sell back than Berkeley's "custom edition" crud.

If I do buy the complete textbook will I
1. Be reading anything different than my peers who have the custom edition
2. Have to match homework questions assigned in the custon with the complete, or is all homework/other assignments done through masteringphysics

basically will I have to deal with any complications for buying the complete

Seeing as how the entry in your post mentioned the 4th edition, you might want to purchase that instead of the 3rd edition. You'll be reading the same stuff whether you buy the complete or the custom text. I'm fairly sure the problem numbers correspond as well, but you might want to double check with your professor.

although looking at the price, the 3rd edition would probably be a better buy...again, you should ask your professor about the homework. When I took the course in spring 08, the homework problems were available on MasteringPhysics.

If I buy the 4th edition from Amazon thru the link Cupola provided, can you give me a link to the remaining texts I need to purchase? thx for your time.

compscibeast: uh im kinda lazy to give u the direct link, but the workbooks are ucb only (i think), so I just bought mine at the cal bookstore, but you could also go to neds. p.s. theres a link in bearfacts/telebears where you can buy your books for class and you can check it out there. oh and if you buy the complete, you get masteringphysics for 3 semesters/2 years, so you'll only have to buy workbooks for 7a-7c

yea its a total scam....thats why u should buy the compelete giancoli.

It is a total scam because the material for 7A hasn't changed in decades. A textbook from the 1960s would be current. Editions are changed purely to render obsolete older ones whose content is perfectly current. It's kind of sad that the people poached in this scheme are college students, who have been subjected to the highest rate of inflation of any goods out there, the cost of higher education having gone sky-up over the past coule of decades.

Do students get together and photocopy textbooks?

calx: no students dont. its often more time consuming, costly, and bothersome than just buying the book. it is pretty much a scam that they change it so often, but they do sometimes add some current examples of stuff, but its definitely not worth the premium. and you should buy on amazon marketplace to get it cheaper

ok, I won't buy into their BS and will stick with my third edition from like 3 years ago when I took 7B. I'm assuming "MasteringPhysics" is similar to WebAssign...so the HW are assigned online and you don't need the latest edition textbook to match HW problems. And what is that workbook thing? I doubt I will use it much?

Too bad, I guess a lot of inexperience freshman would buy into their scam.

hypnosX: check with your teacher to make sure the third edition is alright. masteringphysics gives you the questions online. the workbook is necessary. its used for labs and extra problems for discussion.
