Physics 7AB or 7C

wondering weather i should go through the physics 7AB or 7C route..
Physics 7AB
pros:
-slower pace and more time to build a good foundation
cons:
-7A is calculus based and never took calculus, although you can take it concurrently?

Physics 7C
pros:
-don't have to take physics first quarter, can use that space to take another class and get ahead
-got a full quarter of calculus before i take 7C
cons:
-fast paced
-could forget a lot of physics in 1 quarter break, will have a hard time with fast pace?

Info:
taking honors physics right now and acing it, (although teacher kind of lowered his standards a little so everyone could pass). What i hate is that although i aced the material, i didn't have time to really know the concepts, because the class is fast paced.

I say physics 7C. Why not skip a quarter of physics if you can.

You will probably forget everything the summer before you transfer. I wouldn’t worry though. I don’t think even previous knowledge of physics is required.

Thanks! as for a solid foundation? sorry im just concerned because im taking physics in hs right now and we only got 20 weeks to cover a years worth of physics and were just dabbling on the topics…the teacher even said so himself.

Dear amigos,

I am a first year CHP Electrical Engineering major at UCI currently.

For this school year, the Physics 7A/7B series was not offered at all to take and will probably never be offered due to budget cuts.

So, instead, most students take Physics 2 and then they take Physics 7C after that.

Well, since you are taking Honors Physics already in high school, at least the teacher should have covered vectors, kinematics and projectile motion in some detail, which is covered in the Physics 2 class.

But, not everybody has to enroll in the Physics 2 class and people can skip to Physics 7C directly if they pass the Physics 2 Placement test and I recommend that you take the placement test to skip Physics 2. I have heard terrible stories about students that took Physics 2 and luckily, I passed the placement test and took Physics 7C directly.

I do not know if you have taken calculus in high school yet, since the placement test does test basic calculus skills like derivatives and integrals.

If you have not taken calculus, I would at least take Physics 2 first so that you will not struggle with later physics classes, although, Physics 7C does not involve much calculus at all, and it is only in Physics 7D that students have to use calculus regularly.

I hope this answers the questions regarding Physics classes and good luck.

Budget cuts blows…let’s hope that they offer the 7ab series this year. Cause for some reason I feel like I’m being screwed over if I tale physics 2, seems like a hs course…well u guess I should brush up on my physics so I can pass

Btw what calc topics are covered in the 7c placement test? I have ample time to learn it if it’s just basic calc, and it’ll be good prep for when I actually take calc.

Dear amigos,

Well, I think Physics 7A/7B will never be offered at all since there is even a worse budget this year. I think that everyone has to take the placement test, even if they are going to enroll in Physics 2.

For the calculus that will be on the physics 7c placement test, there will be derivatives and integrals. For derivatives, I think that knowing the product and quotient rule along with derivatives of polymonimals and trig funtions should be enough. As for integrals, I think that knowing indefinite and definite integrals of polymonials and trig functions should be enough too.

Basically, it will just be basic calc that will be on the placement test. Although, I would want to know how to find the dot and cross product of vectors also.

In order to enroll in Physics 7C, a person needs to take Math 2B as a corequisite, which means taking Math 2B at the same time. So, to be able to enroll in Physics 7C for winter, you need to take Math 2A during Fall Quarter and then take Math 2B during winter quarter.

Good luck on preparing for the placement test.

Thanks! I know its wrong to study for a placement test, but i just hate rushing through a course and not being able to really go in depth. Nevertheless, thanks for all the info ahead of time really appreciate it, once i wake up tomorrow ima go barnes and nobles and get myself a AP physics C book  for review that is. Thanks again.

Uh, pretty sure that Physics 7AB hasn’t existed for years. They simply changed the names of the courses. Now Physics 2 is the first class in the sequence. It has nothing to do with the budget.

That said, physics 2 is retardedly easy, and the placement test has like basic derivative and vector questions on it. I would try to place directly into 7C if i were you.

Well, Physics 7A/7B did exist during the 2009/2010 school year. But the courses are not just changed, in fact Physics 2 and Physics 7C goes at a different pace than Physics 7A/7B.

Physics 2 teaches only kinematics, vectors, basic calculus and is like a math course. But it is in Physics 7C that starts taking about forces, momentum and all of the regular stuff that appears in classical mechanics and goes fast compared to 2. While, Physics 7A/7B do teach the same stuff as Physics 2/7C, Physics 7A/7B does teach thermodynamics, which is not taught at all in Physics 2/7C.

I am sure that you do not need a AP physics C book at all to study for the placement test, since the placement test material is relatively easy compared to the stuff in AP, which is more like stuff taught in Physics 7C.
I would just study the notes that your teacher did for Honors Physics for kinematics and get a calc book instead.

The department realized it was wasting money with Phys 7a/b and c. Now, everyone takes physics 7c/d (freshmen mechanics and e&m, respectively) and maybe 7e. If you need prep, they make you take phys 2 (intro to math methods) before 7c.
I could go over the differences, but it doesn’t really matter. If you can, skip phys 2 and head to phys 7c.

And I wouldn’t say its been YEARS since they offered 7A… they offered it last year and the 7a/b system was what I used (2 years ago).

Alright. Point is, it’s not because of the budget. Physics 2 is the same as physics 7A
