This thread is addressing the mathematics and physics department at CMU and it is addressed to Current/alumni at Carnegie Mellon.

What can you tell me about the mathematics and physic department at CMU; especially the nuclear and astronomy areas? How is its reputation in the academic world? Is the curriculum flexible? Do the professors care about their students? Are there opportunities for research at the undergraduate level?

I was a physics minor and found the physics classes to be pretty good. I didn’t enjoy them as much as my Materials Science & Engineering classes, but I also took a number that are known to be pretty miserable in that department. I was focused on the more solid-state physics aspects, though, so I can’t comment about nuclear/astronomy at all.

I’ve heard the math department is mostly focused towards applied math, though I’m sure there’s more theoretical stuff being done with all of the logic people from philosophy and CS people doing their whatnot.
