I am going to be a sophomore this school year and I currently I am signed up to take a first-year physics course. I would like to major in something relating to physics in college, however is it okay to take physics before chemistry? I’ve already done some studying for physics. I am planning to take chem as a junior.
Yes, it’s fine (provided, of course, that your school is okay with it). You don’t need chemistry to understand physics.
In Physics, you will need to know the parts of the atom for Electrostatics, but that’s the basics like proton, neutron, and electron. Otherwise, Chemistry is NOT a requirement for Physics.
I’m going to assume that you’re not going to learn about Atomic and Nuclear Physics because there’s some chemistry in there.
Hope this helps and good luck with sophomore year!
I’m taking physics and chemistry at the same time this year as a sophmore and have had no trouble so far.
Thanks for the help everyone!
@JMS357 approximately how much chemistry is used in atomic and nuclear physics? The syllabus says that will be covered.
I’ve heard about chemistry being used because my physics teacher taught AP Physics 2 (while I took his Academic (CP) Physics class). I’m not sure how much you need to know, but you should use some AP Physics B or AP Physics 2 review guides or notes on atomic and nuclear physics. Sorry for not being able to fully answer your question.
I can give you my physics teacher’s webpage, it has all the AP Physics 2 notes: rtmalik.com
@JMS357 thanks!
If your school is letting you take it, you’ll probably be fine.
Physics actually covers topics necessary for more advanced Chemistry, so you’ll be fine. I actually took Physics freshman year and would be taking Chemistry this year if it weren’t for state exam requirements. There is actually a national push by scientists to have the sequence be Physics --> Chemistry --> Biology. Physics is just a broader version of Chemistry and Biology. It makes more sense to me than the other science classes because you can easily apply it to the real world. You already have a grasp on many Physics topics without knowing it. Take whatever sequence your school allows and have fun!
I took Physics sophomore year before Chem and AP Physics junior year and found it to be a great format in the long run as the difficulty of Physics helped me adjust and made both Chem and AP Physics easier. Your school allows it, so there shouldn’t be any problem taking it out of sequence, and it may even be better overall.
At my school the general sequence is biology to chemistry to physics. However, I agree with the above commenters that it is not absolutely necessary. Physics has some chemistry concepts in it, along with a few techniques that you might not be familiar with (ex: dimensional analysis). You should be find though! If you have trouble just ask your teacher what would be some helpful topics to review/learn.
