Hello,

I've been accepted to Harvey Mudd College and the University of Chicago with approximately equal financial aid. I have until May 1st to make my decision and I'm about 50-50 at this point.

I'm interested in majoring in physics with an emphasis on mathematics. I wonder which school has the better undergraduate program for doing that. If you know, please provide PROs and CONs concerning factors such as statistics, research opportunities, student groups, class size, professor involvement, social environment and whatever else you can.

Thanks much! =)

WOW very NICE. First of all Congrats!

This is so tough. I think you would find equal opportunities academically at both institutions. I really do not see a difference, Chicago is top 10 nationally in physics for grad programs, but Mudd is right there.

I honestly think it is more about where you will feel most comfortable in So Cal or Chicago? Also do you want to be near a big city or in the midst of it. In L.A. you will need a car (Pomona is about 25 min from downtown), in Chicago you could get away without one. Obviously, weather is nice in L.A.

Mudd is truly an LAC and part of a great consortium with Pomona, CMC etc. Chicago very much has an LAC feel to it but at the same time a university feel. I honestly think it comes down to preference. I think you should visit both and just “feel” it. You will know when you step on campus. I do think you will get more one on one time at Mudd and a more nurturing environment, on the other hand Chicago might have more resources, but you can’t go wrong.

PERSONALLY, I would go to Chicago, but that is just my preference.
