physics in yale???

Just wanted to know how prestigious/good is the physics major in Yale. is it on par with other Top schools in physics eg MIT, Stanford?
I know political science is pretty good.

and everyone knows political science strength translates directly into physics strength.

NOT!

Try MIT CalTech Princeton maybe for physics. Cornell?

Yale and physics is like Caltech and linguistics. Not the strongest but if you want the school name and not the major, by all means full steam ahead.

LOL...is it really that bad?

its actually pretty good

engineering is not Yale's strong point; but i don't see any reason why physics at yale wouldn't be good; Yale's science department is pretty strong, imo

They're pouring money into science/engineering, so if it's not good now, it will be.

wow.... im still trying to decide between princeton/caltech/tale for physics( but I may end up majoring in sth else instead).... the problem is: i like yale bc of its political awareness/spirit(also interested).. am I right?
Princeton is top-notch in math... also interested.. and CalTech has its own Nasa Laboratory!!!
This is THE hardest decision.. and my mother only wants me to apply to one more :S (bc of the money)

application fees are not that bad... sure, 10 schools may cost 600 dollars while 5 may cost 300, but that 300 dollars can go a long way if you get into one of these colleges

yeah.. thats what Ive been trying to telll my parents.. just curios: in how many colleges are people in CC aplying?

I've applied to 12 colleges

I was applying to three, then I hastily added MIT, Princeton, and Stanford to the list a few weeks ago when I decided to go into physics.

I was deferred from Yale and am changing my prospective career from "undecided" to "physicist"... anyone think that might help? I figure I might as well let Yale know since they seem to be expanding in the science area, and being a girl can't hurt my chances...

It wont help you. It just means that you want to do something. I think the only way it helps is if you have already demonstarted some sort of excellence in your area.
Besides there are thousands who dont know what they want to major in.
Hi five to all CC phyiscs people; if you cant tell phi6=phi(six)=physics
we need a fb group....

As an actual Physics major at Yale I can give you the following advice:

1) The quality of the Physics program at Yale is on par with any other school in the country. You learn the same material as Physics majors at MIT, Caltech, Stanford etc. Professors are brilliant, are doing fascinating research and are eager to take on undergrads as research assistants.

2) The downside to studying Physics (or any hard science, really) at Yale is that you are in the academic minority. Most of your friends will be studying humanities or social science and it's harder to engage them in what you're learning than vice versa. I personally don't hang out with anybody from my major outside of class which is sometimes upsetting. That wouldn't be the case if I had gone to a school like MIT.

Anyway...there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth.

number2............that.............is........................AWESOME!
for once I can be a minority w00t!
But what is the environment like?
Is it academically stimulating?
