So, I’m planning on putting down my intended major as Physics as it’s the major I, at this point, plan to pursue. However, my mathematics scores are not as strong as my English/Writing scores. I got a 32 on the math portion of the ACT (36 on science, but it’s a joke) and a 4 and 3 respectively on Calc AB/BC. I also am taking AP Physics 1 just this year because I didn’t think my Junior year about taking Physics C and the prerequisites for it. Exactly how screwed am I? Should I consider another major because of this? The school I’m planning on EDing to would be either UChicago or Columbia, so they’re extremely competitive.
I would definitely apply to more than just those two institutions. You can get an excellent physics degree at just about any university. The curriculum is more or less the same everywhere. You should be OK with your math and the fact that you have not taken AP physics until now is not a problem either. If you really like physics, then go for it. As I tell my physics major advisees at Illinois Tech, sometimes it is not a good idea to jump ahead with AP credit in courses that are relevant to the major. Taking AP courses is good and prepares you to take the courses in college since you already have seen the material However, a college course is different than an AP course.
Oh, yeah, those are my reaches that I’m considering EDing to. I have more targets/safeties that I am applying to as well. Thank you for your advice. My essays also center around my passion for physics, so I’d either have to rewrite them or it’d be kinda weird to have me talk all about physics and then apply for an English major.
Indeed!
Excellent advice already given on this thread. Regarding your essays, be sure you read the essay tips in the essay forum. Expressing passion for your major really isn’t the point unless a college has a supplemental question specifically asking for that.
