Physics & Russian Major - Help me find some schools

I would like some help with finding schools with strong programs in both Russian and Physics. I am wiling to look at LACs, but I prefer research university. I am a projected National Merit Semifinalist.

My Stats:
UW GPA: 3.9
W GPA: 4.5
SAT: 2270

Let me know if you need more details.

No advice. Your post just made me smile. My current college freshman is a complete and total physics geek. His younger sister who is only a sophomore is completely a foreign language one and Russian is definitely her preferred language. She is currently torn between Russian and linguistics for a major.

Good luck on finding a good match!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Thank you! Your children know the two best subjects in world!

Additionally, to clarify, I prefer a Russian studies major to a Russian (language) major, but either are good!

The University of Michigan has excellent STEM programs and it has the Center for Russian and East European Studies.

@blprof UMichigan is too expensive for me OOS, unless they offer merit scholarships. Do they?

For an almost full ride option, look into the University of Oklahoma. The offerings may be too limited depending on how advanced in Russian you are though.

Michigan offers OOS FA and small merit. Do you qualify for financial aid? If so many outstanding schools such as Yale and Tufts are excellent in both fields.

@whenhen Interesting, I am more interested in Russian/Eastern European studies, how can I see course offerings for this?

You can search in all subjects outside of just Russian on classnav. However, it doesn’t look like OU has much in the way of Eastern Europe courses. What are your financial requirements, and do you qualify for aid?

University of Washington is the place you want to be.
Maybe Berkeley and maybe Indiana U.

@whenhen I do qualify for aid. At 100% need schools, I am only force to cough up 10k-13k, which is affordable (Stanford for me is free tuition). I want to avoid loans as much as possible, and I would like to stay under 20k. Additionally, I found several OOS schools to be quite unaffordable :(. UNC Chapel Hill, and Virginia were a little bit above 20k, Michigan was 40k. Are there any awesome flagship state public schools that offer good financial aid or good merit aid?

ZucchiniSoup, considering your stats, if you are admitted, you could qualify for a merit scholarship at Michigan, but those are not common.

Below are universities that are excellent in Physics and Russian Language and Studies. Most offer generous financial aid to lower middle income and lower income families. A couple of them are reasonably priced (Minnesota in particular) and offer good scholarships.

Brown University
Columbia University
Cornell University
Duke University
Harvard University
Northwestern University
Princeton University
Stanford University
University of Chicago
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
University of Pennsylvania
University of Washington
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Yale University

UIUC? My sister went there for grad school in Russian a while ago, and I know their physics dept. is good.

I would recommend that you check the Russian Flagship programs (http://flagship.americancouncils.org/russian/?q=content/domestic-flagship-programs) to see if any of them offer scholarships to students accepted in these programs. Of these schools, Wisconsin and UCLA also have strong physics depts.

If you’re interested in Russian Studies, the website, “Russia Direct” (http://www.russia-direct.org/) recently ranked Russian Studies programs. In rank order these programs were: Harvard, Wisconsin, Columbia, Illinois, Stanford, Michigan, Indiana, Berkeley, Georgetown, Washington, Yale, Ohio State, NYU, Miami (Ohio), Johns Hopkins, Chicago, Texas, Pitt, UNC, Brown, UVa, Arizona, Northwestern, Middlebury (Monterey), George Washington, Kansas, Duke, Penn State, Oregon, Florida State, Missouri, and Boston College. This ranking is for MA programs, but it gives you some idea of overall quality. You can download the full report by registering on the Russia Direct website. Of course, quite a few of these schools have strong physics programs, as well.
