My son would like to attend a small LAC and study physics. In order to qualify for a large merit scholarship, he'll be focusing on "second" and "third" tier LACs. How can we evaluate the strength of LAC physics programs? Are there any rankings or lists we should be aware of? The websites for the schools of course sound great, but some programs only have a handful of physics professors, and some are visiting or just instructors. And yet, a few great professors can make a great education.

Visit the schools if you can and see if you can meet with any of the physics profs. Go to ratemyprofessors.com and myedu.com and see what students have said. Good teaching alone won’t elevate a college to the top tier, and you’re likely to find excellent teachers at almost any LAC.
