Physics without taking the class?

Hi all! I'm trying to decide which subject tests to take in the fall. I'm already planning on taking U.S. History and Biology, but I'm trying to decide my third test. I didn't do as well as I thought on Literature, and I'd like to try out another science since the WH test is only offered in December. Do you think I'll be okay if I take the physics test without taking the class? I feel like I'm pretty decent at studying on my own. With that said, does anyone recommend any books? The only other viable option is Chemistry, but I hear the curve isn't as friendly, and AP Chemistry was hard for me (even though I pulled an A in the class). Thanks in advance!

bump 10char. Please help!

kite runner, i’m in almost the same situation as well and was wondering the same thing about the possiblity of self-studying physics. I heard the curve for physics was pretty lenient though/

hopefully someone responds.

Physics B, maybe, because it’s algebra-based, and the concepts are more intuitive.

Physics C, bad idea, because it’s calculus-based, and the concepts can be relatively obscure. Unless you are really good at calculus already, I really doubt you could handle doing Physics C by self-study.

I say this as a parent whose son just took the Physics C exam and found it very, very difficult, after having taken the class from a very good teacher with a Ph.D. in physics whose students get most of the 5’s in our state.

I think the OP is talking about the SAT II rather than the AP tests. If so – I took the SAT II after a year of honors physics that only covered half the material, and with some solid studying got an 800. It’s definitely possible if you’re willing to put in the time. I used PR.

Oh, my! How did I miss that the OP was talking about SAT-II, not AP? And it’s right in the name of this section of the forum. Do I feel dumb!

Scratch my advice. Yes, you CAN ace the SAT-II in physics without taking the class, just like 112358 said.

Alright, cool. Thanks everybody! I think I’m going to go for it. :)
