PI/Nonprofit

What kind of summer internships or work opportunities are avaliable for a college first year who is interested in public interest law/nonprofit organizations? I am particularly interested in working with low-income communities, minorities, or recent immigrants.

Any suggestions on how to go about finding a good internship that is hands on (lots of field work)?

I think the best way would be to look through your school's career center job listings, as well as craigslist. I saw a post (I'm in SF) on urban development, where much of your work is to talk to local business owners and interview them, etc. Sounded pretty interesting. I also currently intern for a immigrant/refugee nonprofit, a job I found through my school's career fair.

As a freshman, you should be able to find something bc nonprofits are much more laidback (i.e., no "I don't want to talk to you until you're a junior" b.s.), but I guess it's a matter of finding organizations interested in taking on interns.
