Oh, right - they are not “at” the Unifieds - but there at the same time. That would explain calling them “regionals” - thanks for clarifying!

My daughter auditioned in Chicago last year and did have a piano audition. She has taken piano lessons, but is is in way proficient and she breezed through the piano audition.

oops sorry about that… she isn’t in any way proficient…

The University of Michigan does appear as one of the schools listed on the “unifieds” webpage…are they still somehow separate from “unifieds”, like CMU or Juilliard?

Yes, as mention in post #20, UMich is NOT a participant at Unifieds. They do hold regional auditions in Chicago and NYC, as well as on campus. Information about their regional auditions are on their own site, not the Unifieds’s site. The Unifieds site only includes member schools that participate in that event. However, many colleges, UMich being one of them, ALSO hold auditions in regional cities, NOT associated with the Unifieds.

OK, now I see your confusion. This thread is talking about the MT auditions (this is the MT Forum).

On the Unifieds site, it lists UMich and I am almost certain that is JUST pertaining to the ACTING/Theater auditions. Those are entirely separate from the MT program auditions.

For example, the Theater department attends the LA auditions. MT doesn’t.

Ok…im sorry i’m a bit confused now…are you saying that the University of Michigan is only part of Unifieds for Acting auditions, but for MT they are not part of “Unifieds” they just hold simultaneous auditions? Thanks for clarifying…i appreciate it!

My understanding is that the MT auditions for UMich are NOT through Unifieds. However, UMich holds MT auditions in Chicago on Feb. 1 and 2 (which happens to coincide with the Unifieds dates in Chicago) and in NYC on March 6 (which is NOT when Unifieds are held in NYC). The MT program does not hold auditions in LA. ALL OF THESE MT auditions are NOT the UNIFIEDS.

UMich’s Theater/Drama program holds auditions at the Unifieds in NYC Jan. 30 and 31, in Chicago on Feb. 2 and 3, and in LA Feb. 6 and 7. ALL of THESE Theatre/Drama auditions are the UNIFIEDS.

ALL OF THIS INFORMATION IS RIGHT ON UMICHIGAN’S OWN WEBSITE FOR THE RESPECTIVE DEPARTMENTS.

If I am in error, I hope someone will correct me.

Soozievt, that’s how I understand it as well. The UMichican’s Dept of Theatre & Drama will be at the NY unifieds (Jan 30 & 31) to audition acting majors. Their Dept of Music Theater will not be there -they will be auditioning MT applicants on 3/6 in NYC. I called the school a few weeks back to clarify when scheduling my D’s audition. But the one thing I’m not sure about is…what if the MT applicant wishes to be considered for acting in the event they are not accepted into MT? Will they be considered based on the MT audition? Or would they need to do a separate audition through the Dept of Theatre & Drama?

vksmom, the auditions for the acting program and the MT program at UMich are SEPARATE. You would have to apply to each and schedule auditions for each. This is NOT a school where you do one audition and are considered for BOTH programs, as is done at CMU, Syracuse or Ithaca, for example. If you audition for MT at UMich, you are ONLY considered for MT, and vice versa for the Acting program audition. They are run separately.

Does anybody know the current situation about piano at a MT audition? From what I gather on the website, a good standard of piano is required however that seems to be what the conception was back in 2010 on this forum. Can anyone offer insight? Is it still only for placement?

irishdude400~ Piano is only for placement
