Piano/composition summer institutes

I am looking for summer institutes for either piano or composition (actually, to do both would be best!). Does anyone have any suggestions?
D will have finished her sophomore year in HS.

I always chime in with Walden School in Dublin, NH. Changed our daughter’s life.

How did it change your daughter’s life?

Check out California Summer Music - might be able to do both composition and piano.

There are some summer programs with two sessions–at some of these you might do piano at one, and composition at the next. Maybe Interlochen?

My son did composition at BUTI, and really loved it.

Others will suggest programs. Not sure which of these would allow doing both piano and composition. As others said, maybe one session in piano and one in composition.

To answer your question: Walden confirmed our daughter’s interest in composition, introduced her to professional musicians who encouraged her, and a community focused on collaboration vs competition, with an emphasis on “new music” that was pretty inspiring, at least for her. Well-known pianists stay and perform there, work (and eat) with the student composers, and student pianists have opportunities to perform, but I don’t think that formal lessons for instruments are part of the program. You can call them about this, perhaps, if your daughter is interested at all.

Brevard only took two high-school age composers this past summer, so it’s pretty small.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I am adding them to our spreadsheet. I had never heard of Yellow Barn – and their website is missing a lot of information – but it sounds very interesting. I hope they will post more as they start planning for next year. And I hope that by the application due dates my daughter will have an idea which kind of program she prefers, composition or piano.

Yellow Barn - note that for her age it’s the Young Artists Program you’ll be looking at: [Yellow Barn Music School & Festival](http://www.yellowbarn.org/musicschool/yap)

Hi Hunt,
My son was accepted into the BUTI Young Composer’s program as well! I was wondering whether you could tell me about your son’s experience there? Thank you so much
