Hello everyone! This is my first post on CC, however, I’ve been a longtime lurker and have learned so much from this forum. I’m a pianist who applied to Masters programs this audition season, and was accepted to IU Jacobs! (still waiting to hear on scholarship info though)
My question is: What do you know about the piano department at IU? I’ve read a lot on CC about IU in general, but haven’t been able to find any posts specifically on the piano department. I’m also open to learning more about JSOM as a whole!
Thanks!
My D went to Jacobs for VP. So I don’t know anything particular about piano performance…except to say that you will be surrounded by talent. It is a large, competitive school with many resources (something you probably already know).
For a grad student, the best advice will come from other grad students. Do you have any contacts at IU…or a friend of a friend of a friend who knows someone there…from your current school, festivals or competitions? While students will usually promote their own school a bit…I think that many can be “brutally honest” about the good, the bad and the ugly of any school. In that way, you can probably figure out if the “environment” is a good fit for your personality. In general, IU is known for being large and a competitive environment. Still the right teacher (most are very good) takes the edge off that…and shephards the student in their studies.
If you don’t know anyone, you can contact the music administration and ask for contact information for a student willing to answer questions. My D did this for one grad school. Or if you have a studio, you could ask the teacher for contacts of current students…again something my D did.
The only thing I know about piano at IU is that Norman Krieger was hired on as faculty a few years ago. He is a fantastic pianist and human being and from the postings about his studio at USC and IU seems to be a beloved teacher.
My sister attended IU in the 80’s as a bassoon performance major and loved the town and the music school.
