Hi guys I'm a second year engineering student and I've realized that I really want to get a music minor in piano performance. However I've heard that the school of music doesn't offer minors and I'm basically SOL here.
If there's really no possibility of me getting a minor, I just think that's pretty hilarious. None of the other UCs or private schools deny music minors and it's just plain weird UCLA takes on this attitude. Anyone have definitive word about what's going on?

Yeah, I was pretty annoyed too when I first found out UCLA doesn’t have a music minor.

I think they just want to maintain this exclusivity of the discipline because music majors spend an immense amount of time training to become performers in a competitive industry. Creating a minor program that requires any less would be pointless if a student doesn’t have the intention of becoming a professional musician. The best alternative would be the music history minor, which offers classes on more than just history.

Also, you don’t have to be a music major to take private lessons (but you’ll to pay, just like music majors) or join performance groups. Even certain classes that are supposedly limited to music majors can be pretty flexible if you talk to professors ahead of time. In short, you can give yourself an experience equivalent to a music minor if you are persistent enough, but unfortunately, it won’t show up on your diploma.
