Piano Performance

I am hoping to compete in pinao in this year's Solo and Ensemble Festival in my region, but I don't know what caliber of players and pieces to expect. Can anyone with experience give me somewhat of an idea of the level competitors might be at? Also- would Chopin's Polonaise in C# Minor be an ok piece? Is it too easy, common, etc.? Thanks

I know that solo and ensemble contests that I've competed in usually have different levels and in each level, they have either a list of songs you can shoose from or a set of guidelines. Maybe you can check if your contest has a handbook of some sort.

It depends on your region. But usually, as long as you don't mess up completely and you have good dynamics, style, etc, you should do well.

do you guys have any tips for performing?

a lot of the times i get apprehensive and screw up in front of judges for CM and the like

also what do you do when your hands and fingers are all cold, and it's hard to play that's also been a problem

how often do you practice?
what memorization techniques do you use?

hehehe thanks =)

Anyways, is this your first competition? How old are you? Are you from a diverse region ?

For cold fingers, wear gloves until the start of the competition.

Practice at least 5 days a week

To memorize, play each page separetly until you memorize it. Then combine it a few pages at a time, then play the entire song by memory.

Yeah, wear gloves if your fingers are cold (but make sure to take them off before you perform lol).

Play your song straight through a certain # of times (like, 5 or 10) every day for at least 2 weeks before the competition. If you really want to do well.

For memorization, memorize your hands apart first and then together.

Oh yeah, and have places you can jump to if you forget your piece halfway through. Like, make sure you can start playing your piece from certain places in your music.

hi, i'm from southern orange county... as diverse as you can get right??? asians and more asians and some rich white folk hehe =) just kidding... yeah i've never played in competitions, i suppose i was always too busy doing stuff

do you guys solely rely on "finger memory" like me? or do you actually know what chords you're playing and what not hehe

Haha I rely on "finger memory" even though I'm supposed to use the "good memorization technique" which is what I mentioned earlier.
