Piano Performance

What are the top ranking schools for this?

I don't have any experience in this area, except that two very gifted pianists from my D's school went to Eastman

I'm not that up on this topic but from my research, selected ones include:

Boston University
City University of New York
Curtis Institute of Music
Eastman School of Music
Indiana University, Bloomington
Juilliard school
Manhattan School of Music
Mannes College of Music
New England Conservatory
Northwestern University
Peabody Conservatory
Rice University
Sarah Lawrence College
Southern Methodist University
SUNY, Stony Brook
University of Houston
University of Maryland, College Park
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
University of Southern California
University of Texas, Austin
Yale University School of Music

That is a starting point. Some of these are conservatories and others are in college settings.

PS, both of my children are accomplished pianists and have played for over ten years but are not going on in that field. A gifted pianist who studied with their piano teacher is now at Curtis. I recall a parent on CC who has a gifted pianist son who is at Peabody. I know that some great musicians from our high school have gone to Eastman.

Isn't this a Musical Theatre Major board?

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I saw music theatre and thought maybe it could go there?

Another place to post is under Arts Majors Forum:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/forumdisplay.php?f=503

The book called "The Performing Arts Major College Guide" has recommendations, but for a BM in performance the private teacher is an extremely important component, and the book may be out of date. It was published a number of years ago.
Great players are not always great teachers. I would assume the well known conservatories like Juilliard and Eastman would have great piano faculty, but I am sure there are many others.
You could look where the people winning piano competitions have studied, and ask lots of people.
Good luck!

For new music, you should check out the New England Conservatory in Boston. Bruce Brubaker is an incredible pianist who was recently hired. Also, Stephen Drury (who plays with John Zorn) is an incredible artist and teacher at NEC.

Stonewall, I must agree. A lot of people tell me that New England Conservatory is the place to be. Great piano faculty. Cecil Taylor, John Medeski, Fred Hersch, and Stephen Drury went there.

I have friends at New England Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music. New England Conservatory seems to have all the new music happening. It's incredibly hard to get into New England Conservatory as well. Manhattan School of Music is the place in NYC for aspiring jazz pianists.
