Piano Piece

I’m pretty certain that a piano piece is required in the audition for U of M’s MT program. Can anyone who already auditioned tell me how much of the piece is required? I have a 3-page piano piece worked up, but will I use the whole thing?

Most likely you won't have to play the whole three pages of your piece, especially if there are repeats. Just be ready with it all, and with your scales (two octaves), a few arpeggios and some chord progressions. I am sure you'll do great. I think the piano audition is mostly for placement.

I've heard from a few people who have already auditioned this year and the November audition and the January audition seem to have differed. In November, students were asked to play their prepared pieces if they had brought one (not everybody does this - my D didn't 2 years ago, but was able play scales because of previous Music Theory training) while last Friday, the students were not asked to play a prepared piece. I think they always check sight reading skills.

But Gkoukla is absolutely correct in that you should be prepared for any and everything that may be asked of you. And yes, this part of the audition is for placement in Freshman Piano class and Music Theory. It is not an admission "deal breaker" so don't stress about it.

Break a leg!

i played a clementi (sonatina in c mvt. 2) for them, and they stopped me after like 12 measures...so i guess it depends, just have it all prepared incase.

I have this nocturne by chopin (the famous one that everyone plays) and I have no idea how to cut it so I'm just like playing it from the beginning and letting them cut me off (hey, that way I probably won't get to the runs that I would most likely mess up a teensy bit under pressure lol)

do they do singing sight-reading or piano sight-reading?

ToTheStage: The E flat Nocturne? Good for you! Don't try and cut it, just play it from the very beginning, and let them decide if they want to stop you or not. Don't go right for the ornamental areas, you may get to them anyway.

As theatermom mentioned they definitely will have you sight read a piano piece, maybe even a hymn from a hymnal. I also think they had my D transpose an easy piece.

And I'll be playing Nocturne in C-Sharp Minor.

transpose?? oy vey. I know my theory but I can't transpose very well or very fast.

I don't know what it's in haha. the one that's in The Pianist. I'm actually not sure I'm doing thatone, but KIND OF sure? haha I might do that or the Suite Bergamesque pr

I had a piece prepared last friday, but was only asked to sight read a simple piece on the piano and do chord-building. It's really just for placement. I talked to MTs there who were in the lowest possible class and still got into the program.

The one in the PIanist is the one I'm playing, i believe

Yeah, they don't really let you play that much. I played a Chopin Mazurka that's about 2 pages long, and she stopped me on the second line and was like, "I know you can probably play the rest so that's good." I think they can get a pretty good idea of your ability level as soon as you start, and don't want you to keep going and possibly mess up. (I know I was relieved, I got to stop right before the part I somtiemes screwed up on) :)

The Chopin C# minor is from The Pianist. Good going for you both!

broadwaycorey-cool,we've got the same song then! or...well...if I do it haha. YEAH C#!

Well, I tested fully out of piano so that's great if I make it into the program. The audition was a lot of fun!

broadwaycorey: Congratulations and good luck. UM is truly special.

Anyone know what the piano course #'s are at UM? My son was placed in 112, but I'm not sure what level that is. Thanks.

I do believe it starts at 110, then goes to 111, then 112 and so on.

I think I got 115, which is testing out.

Thanks, broadwaycorey. Were you at UM Friday? I wonder if I bumped into you or even chatted with you -- I talked to a lot of people that day, but no CC people that I know of.

Musical Theatre students are required to have a year of piano performance study...or to test out of that year (which is 2 semesters of study). I believe the sequence starts at 110 and continues 111, 112, 113, 114. So, a person would have "tested out" if they are beginning with 112 or later.

When my D auditioned, she also was placed in the fifth level of the sequence, thus placed out of the piano course requirements. I am posting to inform those that do place out, that she was told that IF you want to take any piano, there was a way to do it. I believe she also talked to a boy she knows who is now a junior, who is also a competent pianist and he still was able to do some piano at UM. So, if you get in and are interested, there may be some piano courses you can take or study out of choice.
