I was wanting to submit a piano portfolio since I’ve been studying for 13 years, have placed in a national fellowship program, taught for 5 years, and I’m a music minor. However, my first semester at my current institution was stressful, and I was assigned easy intermediate pieces to start the program with. Later, I would advance to memorizing sonatas and more complex repertoire.
However, that meant my efforts were focused on memorizing very simple pieces last semester, and I don’t have anything more complex to submit in a month and a half. I know a lot of schools say not to submit a portfolio unless the playing far exceeds the level of a typical collegiate musician.
Would these be acceptable pieces:
Beethoven Sonata No. 6 in F Major, Mvt. 1
Chopin Prelude No. 13
I love the first one, and I’m not sure that the second is too difficult, but it would be simple to memorize and provides a dynamic contrast.
