Piano/violin lessons?

Hi, I'm going to be a freshman at Yale this Fall. I'm really interested in learning to play either the piano or violin (I have no experience).
I heard that each college has a music practice room, but are there lessons offered? Or where can I get some lessons?

My guess is that there will be literally hundreds of kids who could teach you for cheap. That’s where I would look.

For not too much money, you can arrange to take private lessons with a grad student from the School of Music.

Thanks for the responses ^_^. If someone has the estimation of the cost for taking lessons (e.g. with a student), it’d be awesome :D

Here is the info. from the Blue Book: (available at [Yale Online Course Information | Search Courses](Yale Course Search | University Registrar's Office))
Although the faculty of the School of Music attempts to accommodate those who qualify for credit instruction, it cannot guarantee they will be enrolled with the teacher of their choice.
Students who do not qualify for academic credit may also receive lessons. Students accepted for noncredit instruction are charged $500 for twelve hour lessons per term; $300 is charged for twelve half-hour lessons per term. The fees are added to the Student Financial Services bill and are not refundable after the first two weeks of lessons in each term. The half-hour fee is waived for juniors and seniors who are majors in Music.
Auditions (both for credit and not for credit) for assignment to instructors for freshmen and returning students will be held at the beginning of the fall term. To arrange for an audition, students must sign up at http://apply.music.yale.edu/lessons.

Practice studios are readily available to university students, correct? Or do they require a fee?

@Yalemom2: there’s an audition? What if I want to learn from the beginning 'cause I know absolutely nothing about piano/violin at the moment?
Then I guess I can only take lessons with students, not the teachers at School of Music, rite?

There is no audition process for lessons with grad students.

Beginning students have no opportunity to take lessons with School of Music faculty.

Practice rooms are available at no charge. I don’t believe all the dorms on Old Campus have them, but the Residential Colleges do. I know my son’s RC has plenty of practice rooms with good, well-maintained pianos.

firefly90 - I don’t know any more than what is in the blue book, but it looks like wjb has answered the question. Thanks wjb!

Thanks all :)

I have another question: Is the practice studio available in all colleges? Can I have access to practice studios of other colleges as well?

you are asking some awfully detailed questions. correct me if I’m wrong, but you don’t actually know which college YOU are going to be in yet, right?

I think the details vary somewhat by college; some have more practice rooms than others. In my daughter’s house, she pays $5 (either per semester or per year) for access to their practice rooms. Just chill. It will work out. Do you play an instrument now?
