Piano

This is for all those piano players :)
Just wondering what you guys think would be a good song or two good songs for me to play for the admissions officers. What do you think about moonlight sonata or is that too common? I think its a beautiful piece.

you’re absolutely right ; moonlight sonata is a gorgeous, gorgeous piece. it’s well-known so you might not be the only one playing it but as long as you play it with lots of emotion and make the song come to life, you should be fine. be memorable!

I assume you are referring to the first movement? It’s one of those pieces where the notes aren’t hard, but the everything else is. I would much rather hear a beautifully phrased Clementi sonatina than the first movement of Moonlight without the nuances it deserves. I’m NOT saying YOU would play it badly. I’ve just heard it over-pedalled and rushed too many times by students and I’m sure I’m not the only piano teacher out there who would say this. But if you can play it with maturity, it will say a lot about your musical ability.

You should probably play something that showcases both your technique and/or your musical ability. Most importantly, play something that you LOVE and it will show.

Ask your teacher what composers or pieces he/she thinks you play particularly well and go with that. Or…how about this…shoot an email to whomever you will be playing for with a list of your best pieces and ask them what they’d like to hear.

Good luck!

thanks for this thread int! I was wondering this too-- do you guys think something more technical than musical would be less good? Because I was thinking of doing Bach’s toccata which is usually for the organ so there’s a lot less emotive expression (more like none haha). Thanks!

I also second dive and neato. Moonlight would be amazing if executed well–think delicately IMO.
