do you think it's worth it to apply ed to a school that you know you'll get into, and miss the chance of not getting into the school of your dreams (due to stats), but is still very good

or

do you think it's worth it to apply ed to a school that you know you might not get into (due to stats), and mess up by not getting in, and using ed for the school that you like, but it isn't your dream school?

I know you're gonna say you should only ed somewhere where you most definitely desire to attend...I want to go to both, but one more than the other

I don't like the ED system b/c you cannot compare finicial aid packages. If economics has taught anyone anything it is that everything comes at a cost. By EDing a college you are giving up your oppurtunity cost of competing financial aid packages. For example, You can ED to Cargie Mellon and have a 50/50 chance of getting in, (before stats). But if you RD to CMU, if you get in you can then (and are encouraged to) send in competing packages of other colleges to CMU and posibbly get more aid.

hmmmm.... I would say go ED unless your financial situation is of issue, then just RD, that's basically what I did plus I got to see what I was capable of doing in other colleges.

Well, after looking at your stats (on your Harvard Chances thread), I think I would take some really mean essays (and a whole lot of luck) to get you into Havard. Everyone has a chance, but I think you you evaluate the difference in (sticking with my economics theme) untility you get from both schools.

Harvard has a great rep and location, but it might not be the best place for your major, depending on what that is.

Brown is kinda wacky, no core no gpa, but your chances of acceptance increase moreso with EDing to brown than SCEAing to harvard.

glucose, I've been having the same dilemma with Princeton ED and Yale EA. Princeton LOVES my school and Yale HATES us. Yale is my first choice, but it's not like I would hate going to Princeton, but it isn't one of my favorite schools. My heart says Yale, but my mind says Princeton!

But I'm definitely applying SCEA to Yale. Dude, go with your gut. Apply to Harvard.

Also, concerning finances. Take a look at all the colleges you're applying to. If you got into all of them (except Harvard) - even some with money - and you would still go Brown, then you are NOT disadvantaged by applying ED because they don't give merit aid anyway.

If you're serious about med (I think I remember from reading some of your previous threads that you want to do pre-med), make sure you realize that your med school matter more than your undergrad school. Make that your top priority. Look at med school placement, and for combined programs like Brown's PLME. Also, if you went to Brown for undergrad, would you have any advantage in getting into Brown Med? Look into that stuff before calling Harvard your dream school just because it's Harvard. What will do you if you get into Harvard? Just walk around saying that you go to the most famous school ever? Would you even be able to maximize your potential with what they offer? Or would you do better at a school that has much more constructive opportunities, or in a combined program?

So before asking us whether you should apply early to your #1 choice or your #2, decide which of your schools are #1 and #2 with proper justification.

But, in the end, if all you care about is the school's placement by US News, then you're entitled to using that to justify Harvard being your first choice.

Note: if you in fact are not looking into med, then replace "med" with <your intended="" field="" of="" major="">. ;)</your>

i had the same mindset you do now two weeks ago. i have a dream school that i know i want to be at, but they dont offer early. another school i was considering is great, more prestigious in the US, and my dad wanted me to apply ED. i was planning on it, until i realized that if youre lucky enough to know where you want/need to be, dont take that for granted. so now i am not applying anywhere ed, because i know where i need to be.

I would apply EA to the reach rather than ED to the match. One of my goals in life is to never have to ask "What if?" 10 years from now, you might be kicking yourself.
