I'm looking for something not too far from the NJ area, and preferably in a more urban area. Avg-Large sized. To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, I really liked Columbia and MIT.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help in advance!

UPenn, Princeton, Cornell. You'll probably get into Cornell, provided you don't mess up the essay. Barnard, NYU, Boston University, and Rutgers would be matches/safeties.

just wondering, is Rutgers viewed differently by out-of-staters? Cause IMO acceptance is pretty easy to get. They give full scholarships to the top 1/2 of each high school in NJ.

no, that's why i put safety. and i put match because sometimes colleges like that (easy to get into) reject applicants with really good stats because they know that they're the "safety school".

yeah, rutgers rejected last year's salutatorian. =P the funny thing was, rutgers was his 2nd choice school (after columbia, which, luckily, he got into... he only applied to the 2 schools).

the ivies are all in this area, and are all definitely in reach for you (though they're still mostly reaches, as they are for everyone). other possibilities for matches/safeties: tcnj, nyu, tufts, georgetown, johns hopkins, carnegie mellon.

UChicago is like a Columbia and MIT superimposed, with a little bit of Reed/Swarthmore flair. It might be a high match, given the unpredictability of admissions at top schools, but if you can convince the admissions board that you're a good fit for the school (which shouldn't be that hard for you if you like both Columbia and MIT), then I think you can tell yourself that you're in.

Do you know about Columbia SEAS (School of Engineering and Applied Sciences? Also called Fu School of Engineering at times.) That would be pretty much a safety/match for you, as would Barnard. Columbia College is the Ivy league division and is more competitive. You are a great candidate, but there is also a lot of competition. Play up the girl going into science/engineering angle. If you are premed, you might want to not mention it yet. Look at George Washington University- you would probably receive a lot of merit aid there and would definitely get in. I think that Boston College would really want to acquire you as a student. They also give aid, if you need it.
