Basically, I decided I really like Economics/Statistics but I applied to/joined the E-School of the university I’m going to. I’m not really in a position to switch schools (Honors college and my Scholarship would be revoked) so is it an ok idea to pursue a CS degree if my interest is really in data/stats/economics? Maybe with a minor or do Business school? Or should I really switch?
How many extra credits are you allowed in your major? If you can double major in computer science and statistics and get yourself some basic econ classes you’ll be quite the fit for a data analyst position in an economics research or finance business. But get your feet wet in your program first - especially with an Honors College setting you might find mentors who will help you guide your CS major into the areas you love.
Thanks for the reply. I’m not really looking to do a double major because my courseload is already stacked. I also don’t really have too many free elective spots (3) because I completed most of those reqs with APs. I was thinking about doing a cheeky minor in econ or something and then doing Business school afterwards. I do like CS and Math so I will definitely try to get some advice on my major, i just felt Finance/Econ is a better representation of my skills/interests than CS.
Not sure what you mean here. If you have AP credit that replaces some courses, then wouldn’t you get additional free elective spots in place of the courses replaced by AP credit? Or are you intending to use the AP credit to graduate early?
What majors are allowed to retain the scholarship?
If “E-School” means engineering, you may want to look into industrial engineering, which is statistics heavy and may include some financial and economic concepts.
Others may be able to help you better if you are willing to name the school.
Yep sorry should’ve clarified. I’m at UVA and Rodman’s is a pretty prestigious honors program that I don’t really want to give up. They don’t have Industrial Engineering either.
I am supposed to take 10 elective courses (5 Humanities and 5 Unrestricted) for my CS major of which 7 I have fulfilled by APs. I am intending to graduate early but I don’t see a reason to take a class if I don’t need to to graduate with my major. More free time to do other stuff like clubs etc…
UVA has a systems engineering program, which is statistics-heavy:
https://engineering.virginia.edu/departments/systems-and-information-engineering/sie-academics
Included in the major is an application sequence; one of the possible choices is “economic systems” (including economics courses), and another is “mathematical systems” (including statistics courses).
If you do not graduate early, you would have 7 free elective spaces to add more economics, finance, and statistics courses. If you do graduate a semester early, you would have 2-3 free elective spaces for that, assuming one fewer semester means 4-5 fewer courses. Some economics courses may be eligible to fulfill HSS electives.
I looked into that. It seems like Systems Engineering with a focus in Economics or Mathematical Systems has a lot of economics and statistics classes as well as the computery side that I was going for in CS. I also worked out a way to do a minor in Econ with the CS major so I’ll have to decide between the three. Thanks for your help!
