Picking a film major to apply to

Hello! I want to apply to film schools like NYU, Chapman, and USC, where I can either apply to the film production major or their screenwriting major. I’m torn because I’d really like to study both screenwriting and film production. How do I choose which program to apply to?

Right now though, I’m leaning towards screenwriting because writing is one of my strengths, and when I was looking at the film production applications, I felt like I didn’t know how to answer some of the questions asked in the supplemental app. Any advice tho?

Why not apply for both? You can put one as your top major and one as your second. I wouldn’t recommend double majoring but I recommend applying for both because it gives you time to make up your mind. In a couple months you may like one more than the other, who knows so far?

@5writerauthor if I want to double major in something in else, like in linguistics, do you still recommend applying to both Screenwriting and film? I just want to do one film related major with linguistics, but I’m not sure whether that be Screenwriting or film production.

At least at USC you can’t double major unless it is the Cinema Studies track.

@giantoctopus I know that you can double major at USC, it’s just gonna be a lot of work, but it’s definitely possible to double major in film production and, say, linguistics

FYI, both of those majors are super hard to get into because they have such low acceptance rates.
USC SCA film prod acceptance rate is approx 3%. Dodge film prod is 11%. And the screenwriting majors are also super competitive as well, but slightly less competitive than film prod. How many films have you made up until now? If screenwriting is your strength, your best chances of getting accepted is applying to screenwriting as your 1st choice major and then like English as your 2nd choice major. If you get accepted as an English major, and then you can take some electives in SCA, Dodge, or Tisch. If you don’t get accepted in the Screenwriting major or the English major at USC then they will consider you for undeclared major. But if you apply to 2 SCA majors and don’t get accepted, USC will usually reject you even in the undeclared major.
