Picking a Major in HKU

I want to major in the sciences, ideally traditional chinese medicine or pharmacy. im worried though that when i come back to the US the degree wont be respected or credits wont transfer if I want to continue studies. can anyone help me with this? provide any info?

i also have another problem...i am functional in mandarin but know zero cantonese, how difficult would it be to pick up cantonese and do i even have a chance with getting in to HKU? apparently traditional chinese medicine is very rigorous? not sure...

Cantonese is not much more difficult since you know Mandarin. The tones will be different. You will be able to pick up phrases over time through conversations with others. It just takes time, you def. want to talk/practice with people who speak Cantonese to improve. You will have a much harder time speaking rather than understanding though.

The courses at HKU are mostly instructed through English, though some are not. Not sure though about Chinese medicine. My friend took an intro on chinese medicine while abroad, and said it wasn't a difficult course (it was in English).

As for credits transferring, your Univ. should allow you to submit a course equivalency form before you leave for HKU, to see if these courses are approved for credits at your univ. If you go on EAP, you will have to go through that process.

Speaking Mandarin will help you with Cantonese about as much as speaking English would help you with Spanish. There are some little similarities, but they're completely different languages.

ooo, but i wanted to go for my entire college degree, like study there for the entire 3 years for my degree, im not at any university currently, applying tho. I finished up my app a week ago, praying i get in, i want to attend HKU sooooo much! do you know anyone who attended?
