Picking a major JUST to make money...

Okay, this is really just an exercise in curiosity...I am not planning on doing this. That said, I am wondering what major everyone would choose if they were simply interested in making as much money as they possibly could. We have all seen those silly starting salary charts that are always topped by engineers, but that doesn't take into account room for advancement in other fields. Oh, and feel free to elaborate, like any plans to go into med school, law school, etc....basically, what career path would you take to make a ton of money??

As of right now, I plan to major in English. Nothing to do with money, but rather because a) I like English, both writing and literature and b) it would be a very practical major in the long run.

Not sure how I would exactly use it career wise, but I'd like to try and get an MBA afterwards.

you will make a ton of money so long as you are really good in whatever you do.

Unless you decide to teach. (im screwed :/ )

Picking a major based ONLY on career opportunity is a bad idea, but picking a major without considering career opportunities can also be a bad idea.

Perhaps you could pick your major in English, then make another career goal for yourself.

I know a lot of English majors that go on to become lawyers....in which case English is a really nice major for them to choose.

You could also double major or a minor, like I know someone with an English major and a biology minor...but you really have to like both subjects.

You're best bet, is to make a list of majors that interest you, then make a list of careers that interest you. Take a look at your majors, and try to figure out which major you listed could help you achieve the career goals you've listed...and, yes, I think salary should be a consideration when selecting between majors that you enjoy.

From personal experience, I really like a ton of different things (Science, English, Music)....in the sciences I really like biology.
I could have been a music major, and I'll probably take a couple electives in music...but quite frankly, I really like it as a hobby, but wouldn't want to try to make a living with it.

So, at first I was going to major in biology....possibly being premed. But then I realized I didn't really have a backup plan, if I decided I didn't want to go to medical school. So I got involved in biological engineering...which allows me to go onto graduate programs in engineering. Even though I'm really leaning towards medschool it makes me feel a lot better that medical school is not my only great career option. It's harder, but it's really worth keeping my options open.

It's really an ongoing process...and you'll know more about what you want to do when you start taking classes in your potential field.

jPod...thats not true. the department heads of my school make $150k. also, if you become an administrator, you can make upwards of $300k+

I plan to get my BFA in Musical Theatre, so u know im not in it for the money!!! lol. but anyways, i hope i do make loads of money when im older.

Right now...I'm thinking finance and international business major then either investment banking, management or financial consulting, business school or law school. Depends on what happens senior year of college. If I get into, say, Harvard Law with a hefty financial aid package, then that would be hard to give up. But what would also be hard to give up is if I got an offer from an excellent investment bank or consulting firm on wall street that's willing to pay me an astronomical amount of money. But then getting into Wharton MBA would be hard to give up as well.

Well whatever happens, I'm going to become a venture capitalist. I think that fits me really well :)

Just for money: Econ, with some sort of focus in investment banking/money markets/stocks. Investment banking is wher it's at.

Of course I'm not, and I'm in medical school at this point, which is probably the single worst idea ever for getting a job that makes a lot of money. (thank goodness it does though).

My major is english with a minor (possibly a double major) in philosophy and yea, I'm planning on law school (looking to go into public interest law)

If I just wanted to make money I'd probably major in whatever you major in to go into invesment banking or engineering since I have a lot of 'connections' in the engineering world.

jPod...thats not true. the department heads of my school make $150k. also, if you become an administrator, you can make upwards of $300k+

That's education and policy, not teaching chief. I plan on going into administration though.
