Hey everyone! to introduce myself, I’m a sophomore right now. I’ve been a lurker since last year, but just decided to come out of hiding. Now I’m planning for junior year classes and am a little confused. my plan as of now:
AP English Comp.
AP World History
Geometry (yeah, yeah)
Spanish 2
Treble Choir
Family Health, Volleyball (both required)
Theatre 2, Psychology
my questions are about other classes I’m worried about omitting. One, how important are science classes in college decisions? I’d prefer to only take two (with a full load in all other areas), but I want to know if that’s going to make a big difference.
Also, I’ve heard conflicting things about speech and debate. Does it impress colleges or not?
btw, I’m aiming for lower-UCs (SB, SC, etc.) type, but i’m not set. I understand I may very well have to aim even lower. Planning to be a Psych major, (I think, you know, I have a while)
Thank you for any input!

3.45, at the moment. will be pulled up. oh, speaking of that, do schools usually use weighted or unweighted GPAs in ranking? probably varies, huh?

I don't mean to put you down in any way, but if your looking at hyps or any top-tier schools, you'll really need to step things up, like math over the summer because its good to have calc by senior year, yes science all 4 years is good, and bump up on more ap's.

They look mostly at unweighted. Then by looking at your transcript and school profile, they'll get a feel for about how much the GPA's worth.

Regarding your ealier Q: you should try to minimize the appearance of a weakness. Try to look as well rounded as possible. Maybe you should drop one of the fine art classes for a science class?

I understand, Ash, thanks. I'm not going for top tier, more like 2nd if I can manage it. I know most people here are on the hyps train, but that's why I like it - lot's of good info for someone like me.

I'd just like to reiterate my questions - Are science (more than two years) and Speech and Debate important/very helpful in general? The other stuff is just in case it helps. Thank you!

Speech and Debate looks good, especially if you rack up some trophies. Take more than the bare minimum of science. Colleges secretly want you to exceed the bare minimum of their standards.

Science is more important that speech and debate. What science classes have you taken so far? You really don't need psychology in junior year.
Ideally you need to take bio, chem and physics at least at the high school
level.
Also make sure you take Spanish 3 or better during your senior year.

If you are worried about your grades, you can leave your 3rd science class until senior year where grades are not as important.
