So as an incoming freshman this fall, how exactly is the course selection process carried out? When do we pick our classes? How do we know which classes we should be signed up for? Is there someone we can speak to before we get there?

Also, more specifically as a CALS freshman (major is already decided), how soon can we take classes specific to our major (not just general classes)?

You’ll be going to studentcenter.cornell.edu and logging in there after you get your official Cornell NetID account. Once there, the date for when you get to start signing up for classes will be on the right side. I think you start enrolling in summer, August maybe.

To figure out which classes you should be signed up for, you need to at least check CALS official website and find out their OWN specific requirements you need to get a degree in that college.
Since you have a major you want to be in, you should check the department’s website that the major is in and check the required classes you need to take overall and plan out those classes accordingly.
There’s a Course of Study guide that lists all the courses in Cornell that you could go through and choose as your liberal arts credit. You can take your major required classes as soon as possible starting with the prerequisite classes.

it’s likely that you’ll be taking intro classes in your major from your very first semester. CALS doesn’t have so many general requirements that they’d keep you from starting on your major coursework.

playhacker is right that lots of department websites have some recommendations available for their undergraduate programs. you’d probably like to look at those, since you don’t only see the first semester - you can get an idea of what’s coming up in later years as well.
